Questions on apt-get/fink/compiling gaim

Okay so Ive been trying to compile Gaim for the last couple of days on my G4 800/OS X.2.3.
Ive got the latest CVS Source, but I keep getting errors that I need the Gtk+2 development headers installed..

Well I updated fink today and finally GTK+2 showed up.
So I used apt-get to install it, along with GLib2, Pango, etc..
As far as I could tell all the development packages got installed too.

So now what Im wondering is, where does apt-get put things?
The /sw directory or a normal location?
Im wondering if Gaim just cant see the files Ive installed because they are sitting under /sw instead of where Gaim is looking..

Any ideas??

Yes I did.
But im trying to compile the LATEST version from source..
And that can only be done with CVS.

For some reason it just wont see Gtk+2 installed..
