AirPort won't work with PPPoE Verizon DSL

First, let me acknowledge that I am commiting the sin of cross-forum posting with this problem, but I'm frustrated and it just occured to me that this might be a better place than Balloon Help to get answers to my problem.

So here goes...

I put AirPort cards in my iBook and my G4 desktop, and whenever I'm in range of a DHCP network (including one with a cable modem) I can get on it no problem. But now I want to get onto my Verizon DSL wirelessly, but Verizon requires PPPoE, which AirPort doesn't seem to work with. What do I have to do to get online?

My setup is basically like this: An Ethernet cable runs from my DSL modem into my wireless access point (it's not an Apple AirPort Base Station -- it's an obscure-ish access point made by Symbol Technologies, but it's worked with my AirPort card on other networks, so I don't think it's causing the problem); both machines have AirPort cards that can see the access point and get a nice strong signal from it, but neither can seem to send the PPPoE info to it to get permission from the DSL modem to get onto the net. Inside Network Preferences, the PPPoE settings disappear when I switch from Built-in Ethernet to AirPort, which allows only DHCP, Manual, and BootP (and maybe something else), none of which will work with Verizon (so said the Tech Support guy once). Am I SOL on this?

The same hardware setup basically works on one of the other networks I use, except they use a cable modem, which uses DHCP instead of PPPoE. They also might have a router being used, but that's because there are a lot more machines on the network and not all of them are wireless, so I don't see why I would need a router for my setup.

I think those are all the pertinent details. Any help would be greatly and truly appreciated. I'm eager to go wireless in my apartment.

you would need a router to be able to andle the PPPoE authentication.... cool

Re: AirPort won't work with PPPoE Verizon DSL

That's weird, cuz I have SW Bell DSL (PPoE as well), and all of a sudden I can't use Airport anymore either--- or my router anymore for that matter.  I had the Base Station connected to the router (Siemens SpeedStream), with my PC in the other port of the router.  Then one day, I couldn't connect anymore.  I have no probs if I plug my DSL modem directly into the comps, but so far that's the ONLY way I can connect....  cry    mad
