Advice For Converting PAL to NTSC

Hey guys. I'm in need of some advice. I'm currently living in Uzbekistan and have some American friends who would like to make a copy of a wedding tape for family and friends back home. The problem comes in that the videographer gave them a PAL tape.

The VCR is a universial deck, meaning it can play/record in NTSC and PAL, but my video camera is NTSC only. Before i knew it was a PAL tape i attemted to record to a DV tape but the picture was all messed up (on the viewfinder LCD) and didn't record.

I have a Ti667 (GE) with iMovie 2, which can recognize PAL video signals. I'm wondering if i can route the video signal from the VCR, thru the camera (Canon ZR20 i think), to my laptop. I didn't bring the correct cables with me to try that, so i thought i'd ask y'all on the possibility of it.

Is what i want to do even possible? What would y'all recommend? Thanks for any info. Hope all is well.

Re: Advice For Converting PAL to NTSC

The universal deck should have a setting on it that lets you output a PAL tape as NTSC.  If you're firewire cam has inputs, then it should work capturing through the camera.  If the picture does not look correct on your viewfinder, then it will more than likely not look good in your capture window on the computer.  Hope this helps.  BTW, you might have to rent another multistandard deck, I suggest the Panasonic AGW1, which will do what I mentioned above.
