Bonehead Music editing Software needed!

I am suggesting an iMac to one of my friends who has never owned a computer . He is very much into music and knows that lots of music guys use macs in the industry.

I am and have been a Mac user for ever (1994) but I am not blinded by "Mac-tunnelvision" and I know there are programs readily available on the Pee Cee that will do what I need (see below) so I am having a hard time justifying his purchase if the only way he can do the above is to buy a "heavy Duty" sound editing program.

What I want to be able to do is as follows

Easily adjust the gain (volume) of an MP3 before burning a CD (yes iTunes "levels" out the volume and will let you adjust the volume but I have found that it doesn't really do a very good job of leveling out the volume and also when I burn the tracks (external CD burner not supported by iTunes I have to "Toast" my CDs) they end up being LOUD and quiet.

Remove "scratches" pops "etc".

Does anyone have any suggestions for me???

I think the same company that makes vegas video makes something low-end for PC's.  Can't remember who that is.  Sonic?

Anyway, they've got it at best buy.

Oh, I was confused.  Well, pro tools is free.  Its fairly simple to figure out too.  The only thing is, its not on X.

I would check versiontracker for anything simpler than that.  Maybe apple will come out with something soon.
