Cubase SX... Logic Audio 6...OSX... My poor brain.
Okay okay okay... I'm lost. This is what I do understand. I use cubase, and I like OSX But I'm not really impressed with some of the things I've read and seen inresponce to SX. Yes it is a first generation OSX iteration of Cubase and I know there are going to be bugs and issues that need to be worked out, of course. The accusition of Cubase does scare me a bit though, I don't want to see support for Mac going south. So yes I'm reluctant to make the update to SX.
On the other hand there is eMagic's Logic Audio suite, that is where I need help...People seem to like it, it sounds good, but I need to "test" it first before I can go get it. I've found no demos for Logic Audio's OS9 versions, I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Can someone help me there? Also... Can someone ease my concerns with Apple's purchase of Emagic? I'm worried it'll get turned into another iApp eventually, thereby being much cheappr down the road. I have one other question, what about cross-grade options? I've not seen anything, but I would imagine that many companies would carry some kind of cross-grade rebate program. Then again, I'm a musician not a businessman.
I've alread read a lot of personal preferance stuff on this and other Topic boards, so I'm not looking for a "Oh yes you have to go with Emagic," Or "Oh no stay with Cubase," or "Pro Tools is the industry standard! What are you doing thinking about these Apps?" I've weighed my options and I want to step into OSX, I want to take advantage of it's audio/midi features, I want to stick with either Cubase or Emagic. I do not like Cakewalk, and I do not like Pro Tools Free. I won't throw down the money on Pro Tools or any of it's equipement, I don't have the funds nor the notariety to warrant that switch. Though, I admit a ProTools set up would be nice, it would be fantastic and I would love it. Realisticly*sniff* it doesn't fit my needs.
So any help, advise *Cringe*, or information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cubase SX... Logic Audio 6...OSX... My poor brain.
I've been using Logic Audio a lot lately, and mostly on my portable. There'll be two albums out by my bands (rock stuff) this year that are either wholly or partly recorded on it, despite the record contracts that secure the studio time - I just like working at home or wherever else I want to go with my laptop. I've found Logic very quick to use after spending three years learning it.
I'm mostly excited about the Apple buyout thing - I'm fairly sure the iApp stuff will be there alongside the pro version, as there really would be no sense in buying a software company making an app that's as quickly becoming an industry standard (along ProTools, with which Logic is more and more compatible) as Logic is, and then getting rid of all its pro features to make an app to be given out for free. Also, any OS incompatibilities and stuff like that will be pretty much gone. There has been speculation, however, on Cubase's future on the Mac after Steinberg was bought by someone (the name escapes)... Hard to say, but then again, using Logic has started to feel like opening christmas presents lately - there's so many cool features I find every day that make my writing and recording process something of an adventure compared to my trusty old (now defunct) Tascam 4-track (R.I.P.), that I really don't feel the need to even try anything else.
*sigh* It took (and will take) a lot of time to learn, though... But so did PhotoShop and all the other apps I now make my living on.
Anyway, I'm just waiting to get to use Logic on OS X permanently... I need IK Multimedia's SampleTank ported first. The audio stuff works great - I get latencies of maybe 2 ms on my desktop's built-in audio in OS X. And fewer CPU processing power shortages.
Hmmmm... I hope that made some sense

Re: Cubase SX... Logic Audio 6...OSX... My poor brain.
yea man, logic audio is very quickly become commonplace in studio space. Pro tools is on its way out because they are still charging the same prices or higher now as they did when they were the only viable computer based recording alternative. home CPU's werent powerful enough to do audio work for a long time so you would get the software protools and run it on your comp, but the real work was done in the pro tools hardware you HAD to buy. wellnow, things have changed, you have whole professional albums being made on laptops, (excluding mastering) and while this is the exception to the rule, it shows that protools better get with the program or get run out of business. the "everyone else has it" argument will ultimatly lose out to the "this provides the same features for less money" argument when dealing with business that plan to succeed.
thats being said, I WANT LOGIC RPC PRO ON OSX AND I WANT GOOD FX, INCLUDING AMPLITUBE TO WORK ON IT! i got a studio pack pro, and im hoping the upgraded software will be announced at NAMM this week.
and the OSx version of thats stuff better not cost me whenb i already got them for OS9 with the promise it would be OSx ready "very very soon"
i dont mind workin in 9, i just want the almost no latency i hear about and i dont like rebooting to go between OS's. i mean, come on, i have a dual processor comp, just let one OS run on each! and let we swap between them!
yea..right..hah.

Re: Cubase SX... Logic Audio 6...OSX... My poor brain.
Thanks for the responces! There is some new wieghty thingies in here for me to think about. The learning curve is something that I'm not frightened by, assumeing that there are a lot of similar features between the two. I still can't find any demos for os 9 or older versions, something tells me they don't exist. Anyway, I just don't want to take to long working the productivity back up after makeing the switch (Yes I am leaning OSX with Logic Audio Right now). Like you mum (although probably not as adeptly, and not with a recording deal, Sweeeeet
), I have a few albums I'd like to get done later this year.
Oh Cubase was Purchased by Pinical I think or something like that, regardless I know they own Some TV stations which are striclty PC. This isn't really saying much, but its enough to get one scared.
Zero, You have no Idea how happy I am to hear you say that ProTools is Antiquated. I thought I would like it, I thought it might be something to shoot for in the future, but now... I can save my money and spend it else where. I'm trying to get this whole Indie label thing started (with limited success, hey I gotta couple bands
) and I want to make sure I'm doing it the most economical way possible. I've already made enough mistakes. Like buying my Mac to new, Buying an external CD-RW when the internal was half the price (and even less then that now), Buying Cubase, buying Peak LE (Took them forever to get me the REG code)
But almost all that is hindsight.
What I want to do is further my music, with the best tools possible, at the best prices possible. Cause it's all about the music!! I don't even really WANT to make money off of it, though it would be nice to ONLY have to do music all the time. Wow, now that is a prospect, haveing so much time to dedicate to the music that I don't know what to do with it?
Okay, excuse the layman question but what is SampleTank? How about this to... Oh heck lets go whole hog and see how much advise I can get, (I'm a sucker for punishment) I personally do a lot of Dance, Ambient Techno, Folk, Experimental Industrial stuff. The main band that I'm working for is into Bluegrass and Folk (it has a nitch fallowing in this area, I'm pretty close to Rosine KY) Any advise on good "extras" to complement the Logic Audio setup? I do a lot of Midi Sequencing, a lot of audio recording, and I use a lot of effects. Any good Mastering software slated, or already out for OSX?
