UT2K3 Broken Map Tip
I've come across a little tip that has helped me run maps that crash UT2K3. If you look in the UT2003.log file in your Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2003/System folder after a crash, sometimes you'll see an error message about not being able to open some music file (they end in ".ogg"). For whatever reason, it seems like sometimes the music file doesn't download with a map. When you try to play that map, the game will crash. One simple fix is to note the name of the music file the game was looking for, then copy one of your existing music files to that name. You probably won't have the music the map designer intended, but the map will now work. If you have something like VLC that plays .ogg files you can preview your existing music files and pick one that seems to fit the map.
If used this method two or three times in the past few days to fix broken maps. One was "EchoChamber" and the another one was a map I saw Brain on just this evening (I don't remember its name). When I got back into that map I didn't see you there, Brain, so I thought I'd pass this tip along. This hasn't fixed the problem with the Betrayal map, so there's some other problem with that map, but sometimes it's just the ticket.

Great idea, ofsg. You're correct. I would never just log out without saying good bye to you; I'd crashed and had hit my limit for 2k3 crashes that day. I'd also found there's no point in trying to log back on until after the map is finished.
I believe the map had the word "Garden" in it. Earthly Delights, Eden, I can't remember the rest. Anyway, I'm starting to feel like I'm playing, and paid for, a beta.
There may be other files that fail to get sent:

I've got about a gazillion entries for this error. I wonder if that's an animation or such?
edit: nope. I d/l-ed the map again, and MayanRuins contains only a .ut2 file.

I get that feeling to Brain. That UT2K3 was a huge beta test and 2K4 will be the final version.
Good tip OSFG! I will add that one and Doc's .uz2 info. I hope to have a dedicated hint and tip thread once we get our own forums. If that will happen.

Just an FYI about the music: Cachophony (Cacophony? -- look on VersionTracker) is a shareware OS X sound editor and can open and export them, if you wanted to, say, listen to the menu music in your car on the way to work.

Betrayal crashes all the Macs. We think is has to do with the way the map was textured.

The biggest problem for me is crashes with online play. Also getting disconnected from the server. I actually got Betrayal to load and play for several min. online before it once again crashed.
The only thing that I can suggest is keep those crash logs flowing to MacSoft.
After all that's what good beta testers are supposed to do.

Wow, so the stability issues are similar on the PC? That's not good.
Don't know about LLevi, but my UT2K3 is very stable on the PC.
Also, Betrayal runs fine on my 'puter

I'm getting pretty fond of KR-Chemical-Burn.ogg, but it's too short. It reminds me of the first Unreal when the space station goes dark and you've got a lot of Skaaj to remove.
I can't find Cacophony on VT. I've been listening to them with VLC.

Brain: No UT2K3 has never crashed, but it just doesn't feel very polished. If you know what I mean. I have had problems tho. I have trouble with DM-Aristocracy online. Seems that I always join as a ghost player on that map. Ping vs Stat net are way off. There was a huge lesson in frustration trying to get UT2K3 to run as a server on a laptop with XP pro as the OS. I ended up formatting and installing Win2KPro. This happened on two machines. Another problem was UT2K3 keeping my KB settings. I had to edit my user.ini in order to get them to stay. It was like after every third launch they would be back to default.
Mac Peeps: Somethings to try on crashing maps. One would to reset all your options to low (ugly), use a lower res and try to run the map. See if it's the graphics card that is hanging you up. Another thing is to try software mode. I know they're not very good solutions, but atleast it would narrow down the problem. Another thing is to try them in instant action. Does the map play off line, but not online. (this is the problem I have with DM_Aristocracy).
