Problem with Final Cut Express

I have a Sony D8 camcorder and have some Hi8 footage which I would like to capture in Final Cut Express. The problem is whenever I click Now on the capture button, FCE will display a message waiting for the timecode. Since my Hi8 timecode cannot be read by the D8 camcorder, how am I supposed to transfer this footage to my computer.

Re: Problem with Final Cut Express

This is just a guess (because I don't have Final Cut Express, but I have used Final Cut Pro), but I think you need to change the device control settings. In Final Cut Pro, you open your "Log and Capture" screen and click the "Capture Settings" tab and change the Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device." Somehow, that doesn't seem right after typing it... but I'm going to leave it because that might help you.  shrug

The only other thing that I can think of is in the "General" tab of the "Preferences" window, you can uncheck the option that says "Abort Capture on Timecode Break." That comes to mind because my captures were aborting if I had a slight gap inbetween clips (and it was picking up the timecode of an old clip). I'm not sure how helpful that is, but it's the best I've got!

Kolobos might not think he's right, but he is.  Disable the control and FCE won't look for timecode and you'll be able to grab clips on the fly.
