Getting dropped from servers problem/solution.

How I solved my "getting dropped from servers" problem.

First here is my setup:
1. Cable modem ->
2. LinkSys Cable/DSL router ->
3. Home LAN ->
4. My G5 as a DHCP client of the router.

The fix:
Set a fixed ip for the G5. Set the router to forward port 2303 (Halo client) to my G5 fixed ip. Bingo no more getting dropped!

Re: Getting dropped from servers problem/solution.

glad that worked for you.

i didn't have the problem with the frequency you're talking about, but i have a slightly different setup:

dsl modem
ethernet hub (not sure what type)
airport base station
my g4

so i'm unsure as to how to set my airport to forward 2303 to my g4... i can definitely set my g4 to a fixed ip (since i'm on the home lan), and i'm using my airport base station as a dhcp server. any ideas? since i tend to mess stuff up with all the internet options, dunno why i'm usually pretty competant with computer stuff.

Hmm... unless you have a router I don't think you can set up a specific port to a specific machine. Hubs (and I believe the airport base station is one also) send every thing to every computer. Are you sure you have a hub and not a router as the first component after the DSL modem?

Re: Getting dropped from servers problem/solution.

i'm not terribly certain, but i think it is... what's a difference between the two (basically, what specifically can the router do that the hub does not)? i don't have any way that i know of to configure the "device following the dsl modem", so i'd think that would make it a hub. however it's my dad's setup so i have no idea how exactly it's set up.

I'm pretty sure that Base Stations are indeed routers.
If you have one (and are using it to get online), check in the Network pref pane to see what the router IP is (probably 10.0.1.1).
All Base Stations that are alone on a wired network (meaning there are no other Airports present) should have that IP.

I don't know about forwarding ports to a specific machine, but I'll bet that you could play around with the Airport Admin Utility to find out.

Re: Getting dropped from servers problem/solution.

i've looked through the settings in the airport admin utility, but there's nothing that i see that looks right (of course, i don't know exactly what i'm looking for). personally, since i don't have this problem very often (once every couple of nights, maybe) i don't think i'll mess with it. i tried updating the software on my base station once, and went a week before i could finally get it back to working order, so the fewer settings i change there, the better. it's automagical, as NAG would say.

Re: Getting dropped from servers problem/solution.

right. i think i'm gonna leave it well enough alone, unless i begin having problems getting dropped. hopefully that means i won't have to deal with it, as knowing my luck i'll screw something up and have no internet (but hey, then i won't be dropped from any servers, right?)

thanks for your help and advice, all  up
