On macs I don't know.
On pc's - 2700 should work, though I'm not positive. It may depend upon the board itself.

I've had problems in macs before using faster ram than was intended - I think the issue is that the mac hardware memory test doesn't always support the faster chips and thus gets false negs.

It's always best to buy the correct specified ram for your hardware. If I were you, I would send it back and get the right ram.

There might also be a ddr/non ddr issue - but I always get ram by what the manufacturer of my board states that it supports.

As I mentioned in the forum, "Have Book Will Trevel", memory that worked perfect in my old 867MHz PwerBook does not work with my new 1GHz; Apple thinks it is due to the new motherboards in the 1GHz. The memory that no longer works, and that I sent back, is labelled 2700 as well.

Maybe the clerk confused the "7" for the "1"    

The memory should work.  Even though it is rated faster then what your Mac supports, it should still work.  However, Apple places tight requirements for there computers.  Mainly memory.  As long as they are willing to take it back then you shouldn't worry.  If you boot your Mac with the memory, it will either not boot or not see it after boot up..  That really is the only bad thing.  And of course waiting to ship and get a new one..

I'm pretty sure it will work.  If it wasn't backwards compatible, I believe it would be shaped different so that it wouldn't fit in the slot.

If you buy from Crucial then you wouldn't have to worry about it. They have a memory selector feature, and they guarantee that they'll send you the right chip.

RAM that is the same format should down-clock. (Never install RAM that's slower than what your motherboard supports or RAM that's of a different format. If, for example, you add a PC-66 stick to a computer with a PC-100 motherboard and 3 other sticks of PC-100, all of your RAM will downclock to PC-66 and you may have instability.)

For example, PC-2700 RAM should work just fine with a PC-2100 motherboard.

PC-133 RAM should work just fine with a PC-100 motherboard.

However, there are cases where mixing RAM of different speeds causes trouble. I installed PC 133 RAM in an old Dell and I had to take out the PC 100 stick already in it to get the machine to boot. I installed a PC 133 chip in my Mom's Indigo PC-100 iMac and it didn't work - but it works in my PC-100 G4.

put the memory in. It'll work fine.
