Re: any place to download?
Nope. You have to either buy it retail or from someone else, and install in with the CD. There are no other legal means to install it other than from the CD. And when I say legal, I mean don't take another route and pirate it. Not that you would do that, right?

Well I suppose you could order it then download it or get a copy from someone. Then I would consider that legal since you've already paid for it.

yeah, i had an illegal copy while i waited for my legit one to come in the mail... only problem was, i couldn't do multiplay.
Immediately, a large toad leaped into her lap and looked at her as if it wanted to be loved. "Grep," it exclaimed. "Don't mind him," explained the Mad Hacker. He's just looking for some string."

Re: any place to download?
Don't bother... for three reasons:
1. If you're curious about whether it's good or you want to test your setup, wait for the demo. It'll be legal that way and nobody will be financially hurt.
2. The game comes with a unique CD key for each copy. Without it you can't play online at the very least. And that's where all the fun is once you finish the awesome solo campaign. So even if you do manage to download and install it, you'll be missing out on a lot.
3. I don't have a problem with the fact that you'll be taking money out of Microsoft's pockets. What I do have a problem with is that you'll also be taking money out of MacSoft's and Gearbox Software's pockets, whom spent many months porting Halo for the PC and Mac.
So unless you want console only games for the future, I wouldn't recommend piracy.

Mine came the day after download, so I got a good start on the single player.
I didn't even attempt online play. I wasn't sure what sort of piracy protection was in effect and didn't want to risk it.

Re: any place to download?
i guess i should clarify... i couldn't join most online servers, although i think i could start my own, or play on a cracked pc server. but i got my retail version a few days later so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Re: any place to download?
It checks your CD Key when you join a server/view the server list. If 2 CD-Keys are found to be online at one time then it boots you from the server, and tosses you back to the main menu.
