However oral history is a legitimate term as well.

What I meant was that the term oral does not apply in that case, in other words it is functionally incorrect, not that he used the incorrect term, but that it was incorrectly made.  Oral refers to the mouth biologically, while verbal refers to speaking.

Basically I meant whoever first came up with it did so incorrectly, not that it is not a legitimate term.

A quick check confirms that verbal means of or pertaining to words whether spoken or written, and that the use of verbal as "spoken, not written" is fairly recent and very limited.  Oral, meaning of or pertaining to the mouth but not necessarily biologically, does indeed mean spoken, and has for many a long century.  It is only very recently that medical, biological, and sexual uses of the term have rendered it potentially ambiguous.  The only case in which I would say "verbal history/tradition" would be more correct than "oral history/tradition" would be information (literally) handed down by ASL.
