Screaming G5
I was transferring my cassette audio book to a cd via Sound Studio 2.1.1.
Had to step out for a bit and and returned home to find the G5 "screaming" (all fans at full tilt) and the error message..."You must Restart your Computer". I didn't think the G5 could make that much noise...and I mean loud!
I then shutdown the G5 by holding the power button in and restarted without a problem, except of course for losing what I had recorded which was no big deal.
I'm not sure what caused the crash but it was rather discerning to say the least. I wonder what would've happened had I not returned home when I did.
I've been leaving my G5 on while away at work with a few apps running but after this incident I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Re: Screaming G5
Wierd, never had that happen to me...
It must be a wierd outcome of a kernel panic.
The processor fans are OS controlled, so when the OS freezes, hardware could take over

Re: Screaming G5
The fans in the g5 are controlled in software by mac os 10, if you were to somehow trick os 9 into working on that machine, or to install linux without proper fan management software the fans would make the same noise: as they will run at full capacity when they don't have instructions from the OS, as a precaution against overheating.
I wouldn't worry about it unless the noise would be a problem in case of a crash going unnoticed for a long period of time. I doubt the machine was in any danger of overheating, just that the fan controllers couldn't get instructions from a crashed os, so they defaulted to overkill in order to prevent any possible damage.
There is some solace in knowing that some things just can't be attained by throwing piles of money at them in the name of corporate greed. --CaptKevMan

Re: Screaming G5
I have voice concern about all those fan "the more one put in a system, the more chance something screw up" before, but what I really don't understand is why the os control of speed/temp and not build in temp/sensor fan, quite a few heatsink/case fan have build in temp sensor to control fan speed in computer world, those temp sen fan shouldn't cost Apple more then a few penny extra.

The fans are hardware controlled. They are throttled by software. In the event that software loses control (such as a kernel panic), the fans all lock on high until the system is reset. This results in much more flexibility and control over the fans than a full "hardware" solution and is fail safe (well, NOTHING is completely fail safe). Hardware controllers are not nearly as fail safe although an actual failure is less eminent.

I have a dual gig that runs full tilt, at all times, and I have put my G5 in target disk mode(no fan control). The fans do indeed scream, but it is a different loud than a Quicksilver. I would say the QS's a little louder than the G5, sans fan control.

The Dual867 isnt a QS, its a MDD (old pic, my setup has improved, new speakers/phone/ipod etc) AKA a WindTunnel

G5s only "scream" in the sense that they are fast!.

Yeah my bad, I have had 4 G4s at work in the past year, I think the loud one was a MDD, but can't remember. It is sitting in the back waiting for a good use. None of our users can stand to work with it in there cubes, and I have gotten a G5. I am going to set it up for use in the server room where it will go unnoticed and be loved.

Whoa, I bet it was 3x louder than your MDD. It's the most insane noise you've ever heard. My floor was rumbling in target disc mode. It's like 3 hair dryers running full tilt.

yeah, it was a kernal panic, it happened and then the fans went full tilt because it doesnt know what the PCU temp is after a kernal panic and it does that to make sure it doesnt overheat. Its a good thing.
