Looking for digital camera suggestions

Hello!

I'm looking for an affordable digital camera (well under $500, hopefully about $300) for use in creating web sites. I'm hoping for a camera that allows close-up shots so I can get in real close to an object and take a decent shot of say, flower petals as well as the normal "landscape" shots. I don't need high-resolution per se. I expect I'd like the shots to be taken at 150ppi, but in the end I'd be using them at 72ppi. My needs aren't of the print-quality variety. Do I need a "4 megapixel" camera? What does that really refer to anyway?

I've read the latest MacAddict #78 reviewing the Kodak EasyShare DX4330, and that looks like it fits the bill, but it only got a "solid" rating. Is there a better camera for my purposes?

Also what are the hidden costs here? Batteries, rechargers, lenses, etc., etc.

Thanks for your time and input.

Max

Re: Looking for digital camera suggestions

My experience with digital camera has solely been the Nikon 2500.   Nikons are said to have the best lenses for close-ups.

Most cameras, I am told, have re-chargeable batteries.  If I was taking a lot of pictures, 2 batteries will be sufficient.  I get by with one battery pretty well.

Some cameras appear too small to be sturdy (hey, what do I know) and others appear clumsy.

The 2 megapixel Nikon is more than sufficient for me, especially for web development.  (EDIT) In low-light situations, results will vary considerably.

But if you want to spend more, get the Nikon 3500.   My estimate on costs --  Nikon 2500 , battery and recharger ($ 280-320 usually), 128  M of COMPACT FLASH (64 is almost the same price) $ 40, carry case $ 30 optional, tax and shipping.  About $ 400.  And get a 2nd battery probably.  The Nikon 2500 has dropped over $ 100 in 6 months.

The Nikon manual is somewhat crappy.  The camera is a lot easier to use than the manual implies.  EDIT --  I don't even use the Nikon software.

Re: Looking for digital camera suggestions

I have a Canon Elph s100.  2.1 megapixels.  It's a good camera, and it's small.  You can't get too close, (stay about 18" away).  The newer models cost around $300 I think.  I like it's size, the software bundle, and it's included battery and charger and cable for USB and TV.

It's small though, and it's nice for carrying in your pocket, it's more difficult to hold steady.

Here's what you need to know about resolution:  They are all 72 ppi jpegs.  However, the pixel dimensions vary.  My camera takes 1600 x 1200 pixel images.  How many pixels you want to use per inch is up to you.  1600 x 1200 / 150 ppi = 10.6 x 8" but the overall pixel dimensions are still 1600 x 1200.
