Re: Ford???

Anyway, Ford is still a US company, but Chrysler is technically British now, as their HQ is Daimler's.

Nope, German actually.

Not surprised, exactly. It's just that those seldom times you've posted, i don't recall you mentioning anyone.

Re: Ford???

If someone purchased a majority stake in Ford, that would be all over the news.

Ford owns, Ford motors, Mercury, Jaguar, Volvo, Austin Martin, Mazda, Lincoln, Land Rover, multiple race teams, and is worlds largest commercial /specialty vehicle manufacturer. And, that's only counting their automotive holdings. Ford is also, more or less, a giant bank and they may or may not still own things like Kings Ford Products etc.

It'd be unusual for a company to buy out Ford. Ford is a multinational 800 pound gorilla that buys automotive companies for smurfs and giggles.

If Ford was to get gobbled up or or to merge, it would be all over the news. It would probably get just as much press as the AOL Time / Warner or the HP / Compaq mergers.

shrug

And as for Japan. Japan is a very cool place... but it's also a very very strange place.

Tokyo is insane. Beer vending machines, outside arcades, indoor skiing, people with LCDs that are walking advertisements, robots, more robots, talking toilets, etc.

What's wrong the Japanese?

What's wrong with them? I'll tell you exactly what's wrong with them!!

mad

They can't speak proper English!!

Sorry - I love that site.  I have the feeling based on that and on other Japanese culture things that I've seen that I'd like it there too much to ever visit... and I'd rather avoid dying of paroxysms of laughter.

Re: Ford???

The best I can say about Ford is that they supply cars and parts for some good race teams.

I still wouldn't want to but one of their street cars, though. I had one, once. There are better choices.

I don't need to spell that properly. I'll never be rich enough to write that down on insurance papers or DMV forms.

Re: Ford???

When people call me a Brit should I be offended?

Scots?  Swedes?  Aussies?

No.  Those terms are also not usually used disparagingly like the term "Japs".  Maybe a quick glance over U.S. history and Japanese/American relations can shed some light for you on why that term is ill-advised.  For the record, I wasn't "offended" per se, nor am I Japanese or Japanese American.  But I do become annoyed when people use it w/o knowing its meaning and then try to later justify its use by saying it's only half-hearted, or I have a "asian" gf, or by saying this is only an anonymous message board.  Grow up.

Relax  wink

No kidding. Is it just me, or is it getting a little 'Nippy' in here?

Re: Ford???

Yeah... what set you off damage?

Nothing.  I was just trying to show it's over-sensitive PC junk.

Brit pride!

Note:  In Britain we have certain words for the countries and cities which make up the UK.  They aren't really considered offensive unless you put a swear before them.  It's the difference between "You mick" and "You smurfing mick!".  Identifying someone as, for example, a Scouser isn't an insult, it becomes an insult when you imply it is bad to be a Scouser.
