Apple posts year over year growth
Double digit growth, revenue increase of 36%, some 829,000 Macs shipped, 733,000 iPods, God knows how much in software. Damn good quarter, if you ask me.

Among other companies with notable results, eMachines jumped into the top five manufacturers in the United States, according to Kay, passing both Gateway and Apple Computer. Toshiba, meanwhile, was in the top five in the United States and worldwide because of notebook sales.
By contrast, Gateway saw its market share shrink in the fourth quarter, Smulders said. Apple also saw its market share stay below the 2 percent mark worldwide in 2003 and below the 3 percent mark in the United States for the year, Smulders said.

I wonder if BMW's are in the top three cars sold. They aren't you say? Then that must then mean they are sucky machines and are doomed for bankruptcy just like Apple. Just because you can't afford a superior machine with a superior OS that kicks, you feel constantly compelled to take digs? Get a life dude.
Yeah, I know this analogy has been used before, it's just sooo easy and to the point. Then again, some people just don't get it and never will. Some peoples kids are just plain, durrrrrr. . .dumb.

Re: Apple posts year over year growth
Actually, Apples net income of 63 million is very very very low for revenue of 2 billion dollars. I'm glad Apple is turning a profit, but really, where is all the money going?
Their gross profit margin is 27%. That means there was 540 million dollars of gross profit. They are spending way too much on general selling and administrative. But then again, they have to.

This board's own AaronS did in this post just the other day:
Only somewhat on topic, but still interesting, on R&D Costs. The following information was gotten from Yahoo's financial page:
Research Development costs for Dell in thousands (Q1 2003 through Q4-2003)

Re: Apple posts year over year growth
There you go; Apple spent $471 million on R&D last fiscal year ($9 million more than Dell, a company with more than six times the yearly revenue).
As Apple grows though, the % of Research and Development plus General Selling and Administrative Cost to Revenue will drop. As the Revenue goes up, the net income % will rise.

Of course, but I wasn't saying anything about the percentage of revenue that R&D is; I was remarking on the fact that Apple simply spends more on R&D than a company with more than six times the revenue. Even as the % of Apple revenue they spend on R&D declines, it still won't be as low as that of Dell's. Even now it could spend a lower amount on R&D than Dell does and still spend a higher percentage, but it goes beyond that - it actually spends more money on R&D than a company with more than six times the revenue.
