Sharing a cable connection

I have a G3 350 and a tibook 667.  Right now, I have the cable modem, the G3, and the Tibook attached to a D-Link 5 port 10/100 swich.  The G3 has no problem conecting to the internet, its the Powerbook.  The Tibook runs 10.2.3 while the G3 has 10.1 (lost the 10.2 install disk, need to keep looking).  I have the powerbook set to Built in Ethernet using DHCP (this works fine if I plug the modem into the Tibook then unplug and replug the power cord of the modem).  Is there a way to share the conection?  Also, Im thinking about getting a wireless router for the tibook's airport card.  Any good choices?  I'd go with the new Apple 802.11g basestation, but its too expensive.  I want 802.11g so I'll be set for the future.
Thanks.
BTW, the G3 was conected to the modem before I pluged them all into the swich, if it makes a difference.

Re: Sharing a cable connection

It sounds like your switch doesn't do any routing functions. It seems the reason you unplug you DSL modem/router is to reset the DSL assigned IP. You need a device somewhere on your network capable of doing NAT(network address translation). Perhaps your modem can do it for more than one device if configured to do so?

No, I dont think so (tho im not sure if it can) because the modem was the cheapest they had and the store.  Is there a way to share the conection through software or trick the swich (a DLink DSS-5+) to do the routing for me?
I bought the DSS-5+ because I was lazy and just saw a pict of 2 computers hooked up to the internet on the front.  The information is here.[/url]

Re: Sharing a cable connection

This is what I am working on myself, and I'll get back to you in a couple days myself.  I just got a second hand hub from my dad, I am going back to school and trying to share a connection there.  I know it is possible one way or another.

So.. If anyone doesn't get back to you soon, I shall shortly.

Re: Sharing a cable connection

OK.. I have both my computers on the internet now.  Here is how:

1) Get a hub, I have a second hand "Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Hub".
2) Plugin both computers to the hub.
3) Surf away.

Not much to say..  Both computers are running 10.2.3, both are using DHCP, all the wires are non-crossovers, internet sharing is turned off.  The hub did have an "upink" port which is used as port #5.

Out of curiosity, the computer that can connect to the internet through the switch, what is it's IP shown as?

Re: Sharing a cable connection

You definetly need something that will perform router type functions. The switch you linked to will not. If you are confident your modem will not then I would suggest purchasing a device that will. I have a cheap one($29 or less I can't remember) from www.trendware.com. That I bought at Fry's which now own's Outpost.com. Anyway, there is already and will be more vendors supporting 802.11g other than Apple so go search at www.pricewatch.com or www.pricegrabber.com for "802.11g" and see what pop's up in your price range. On an aside note it is theoretically possible for one machine to act as a router. But it would take some one with a lot more knowledge on it than I have to make it work.
