Thanks, Doc. So would "force model" which he discusses at lenght be PC- specific? I can't find any reference to it in Mac UT.

Thanks, Levi. I'd done a search on "force model" in the UT.ini, but missed the User.ini tip. Thanks again!

Re: FAQ-Tips-Tricks-Tweaks

Wow, that Lotus tips thing is amazing. Lots of good info.

Just a couple more default model notes. When you're setting up default models, remember that:
[1] You can only choose from certain "default" players.
[2] You have to play as either the male or female chosen for it to work.

Re: FAQ-Tips-Tricks-Tweaks

I can't stand forced models....
I like variety in my matches, plus my clan uses custom models that represent the personality of the person.  Plus, it helps us figure out if someone is impersonating one of our members.

Easter Eggs

Bonus info on Epic
While playing through the Single Player mode of the game, click on the Details (at the bottom). Now, at the top of the screen, there is a bar with three tabs on it. If you go to the Other Tournament Matches tab, one of the matches will be Epic Games Inc. vs. ____ (ie, Epic vs. The Corrupt). If you right click on Epic Games Inc., a sub menu will pop up with Team details. If you click on that, a small window will pop up with some information on the history of Epic.

Enough for now...

Re: FAQ-Tips-Tricks-Tweaks

Installing stuff for UT2K4

There are two possibilities.

1. the ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004 folder or
2. in the Unreal Tournament 2004.app package

The first time you run UT2K4 the folder Unreal Tournament 2004 is created in ~/Library/Application Support/. There you will find a System folder and if you have gone online and have downloaded some maps or other files a Cache folder. In the System folder you will find the User.ini and UT2004.ini files. If you create in ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/ the folders Maps, Textures, StaticMeshes  you can install maps and if they have separate texture and static mesh files in these folders. You can also install animation files in an Animations folder. A word of caution, karma data files must be installed in the Unreal Tournament 2004.app package (see below). You can also install some mods (.u often with .ini, .int or .ucl files) as well in the ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/System folder. Again a word of caution here some of these will work and some will not and may require installation in the .app package.

My preference is to install maps in the ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/Maps and if they have texture or static mesh files those go in the appropriate folders in ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/. I try some mods in the ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/System folder. Characters/models and total conversion mods should be installed in the .app package which is what we will discuss next.

The .app package is what you are seeing the finder as the program Unreal Tournament 2004. This in fact a folder containing the program and the basic files necessary to run it. To access this Control-click (right click for two or > button mice) and from the contextual menu choose Show Package Contents. A new window opens and there before you are the guts of Unreal Tournament 2004.app. You will see folders:
Animations *
Benchmark
Contents
ForceFeedback
Help
KarmaData *
Manual
Maps *
Music *
Sounds *
Speech
StaticMeshes *
System *
Textures *
Web

The folders of interest in installing things I've marked with an *. If you open these folders you will see the files that UT2K4 uses. The types of files are distinguished by the extension:
.ukx = Animations
.ka = KarmaData
.ut2 = Maps
.ogg = Music
.uax = Sounds
.usx = StaticMeshes
.u, .ini, .int, .ucl, & and bunch of extentions indicating language localization = System
.utx = Textures

In the good old days of UT99 mods/etc were just all dumped in similar folders in the UT99 folder. The current standards for conversion mods call for the mod to be pretty much contained in its own folder with minimal stuff needing to be placed in the System folder of UT2K4. For example the total conversion mod UTXMP is installed in the UTXMP folder at the root level of the package. The catch with mods like this is that they are launched from the Community > User Mods menu in the Windows version of UT2K4. This function does not work in the Mac version but this will be another post about mod launching. Other mods may show up as a game type in the Game Type menus of Instant Action or Join Game (Car Ball is an example).

Mods are typically distributed in two forms

Re: FAQ-Tips-Tricks-Tweaks

Launching mods for UT2K4

All of this is gleaned from posts on Macologist and personal experimentation.

In the Widows version of UT2K4 mods can be launched from the Community>User Mods menu. Unfortunately this function does not work in the Mac version as yet. But never fear there are ways.

In Windows mods can also be launched from the command line and the same pretty much applies to OSX. The best way to do this is with an AppleScript application. I'll give you an example to illustrate but I will not spend much more time on this as there are much simpler ways.

This is the script that launches my Chaos UT installation:

Code:

do shell script "/Applications/Games/UT2K4/'Unreal Tournament 2004.app'/Contents/MacOS/'Unreal Tournament 2004' -userlogo=../ChaosUT2/Help/ChaosUT2Logo.bmp -mod=ChaosUT2 -MainMenuClass=ChaosGames.ChaosGUI_MainMenu"

The first thing to note is that you are actually invoking a unix shell and running a script

Not every mod will work in Mac UT2K4 but most of the popular ones will. Never hurts to try them out. If you really get stuck look around in Macologist or ask in this forum. We'll try to get you up and running.

Here's a general rule of thumb from my UT99 days, if the mod has a .dll or .exe file inside it (like Esc), it probably ain't going to work.
