Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
Is it possible to become dependent on dandruff shampoo? I've looked around the internet a bit, but I don't seem to see any references.

Have you checked with a dermatologist?

Why not? It's a different mechanism, but overuse of aspirin etc can cause "rebound headaches" (ie, you wind up getting headaches simply because you haven't ingested your usual allotment of OTC pain remedies).

Have you checked with a dermatologist?
Not in nearly 12 years.
I've been noticing for a while now that I have to use it more and more frequently to achieve the same results. Like... daily now.
I'm considering shaving and keeping it shaved for a month or so to let it figure out what its normal is supposed to be, but I'd rather not if anyone has any ideas how to break the cycle.

Shaving is the single best thing you can do. Your skin will work out just what the hell it is supposed to do, and you'll have to keep better care of it (using a lotion aftershave works wonders on dry skin).

Afaik, it's best to change shampoo regularly. Otherwise you hair will 'get used to' it and it wouldn't be as effective.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
I have a friend who is a hair dresser. When I was having itchy scalp this summer I asked her for her professional advice on which anti-dandruff shampoo to use (head&shoulders or whatever). She strongly warned me against using ANY drug store brand anti dandruff shampoo for exactly that reason.
As soon as you stop using it your itching/dandruff comes back, and possibly even worse.
She recommended for me to use Tea Tree based salon brand name shampoo, luckily she gave me some for free cause I am not sure if I would spend the money on it.
The other option was to not use shampoo at all for a week or so, just rinse with water, I don;t know if this works but apparently is balances out the oils or something (unless you have a chronic problem) however if you have bad dandruff this could be not soo pleasant.
If neither of those work, and it gets serious, it's probably best to get some kind of prescription stuff.

Yes, I believe, in away, it is possible to become dependent. I have noticed personally that some dandruff shampoos are temporary relief for some forms of dandruff while another product will get rid of it long term if not all together.
What type do you use? When younger I had success with Denorex(sp?) and got rid of it. Later on in my twenties, and this is important, I shaved my head for a time. That was cool, but when I grew hair again, dandruff hit me with a vengeance. After a few years of the tried and true Denorex just temporarily curing it, and it getting worse; and trying other avenues, I tried Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment in the blue bottle. Dandruff gone! I have had the same bottle of Head and Shoulders for a few years now . . .
So mix up and try different shampoos maybe another one will meet your specific biology . . .
Then also I know that sometimes we think we have "dandruff" but we are not rinsing the shampoo out enough . . .
*teh "I'm not reading that long bullsmurf" version*
Be wary of shaving your head, unless you have in the past.
Change up and try different dandruff treatments, the active ingredients vary from product to product.
Be sure to rinse and repeat thoroughly
Just my two cents . . .

I didn't used to... but I think it has become so.

I'm 100% positive that that's not it.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
If its merely dry scalp, go a few days without shampooing to build up your natural skin oils. That should alleviate the itching.
Its possible you have an allergic reaction to that particular shampoo. Try another.
If none of the above help, go ask a dermatologist.

Dandruff shampoo never seemed to work for me.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
I think you can build up a dependancy. Even worse, though, is that you go from dandruff shampoo to neutrogena, and the next thing you know, you're into hair gels and dyes.
That's why I stopped drinking it years ago.

Do you think you'll get dandruff-shampoo-withdrawal headaches or something? I wouldn't think it could happen.

smurf. I use selsun blue everyday!!! I'm an addict!!! Googling it says selenium sulfide causes hair loss too!!!
I did the shaving thing, then used the shampoo and now use it everyday out of habit.
Anyone know a shampoo that won't leave dry hair dry, or too oily. Believe it or not selsun blue with conditioner did the trick. Other name brand combinations haven't worked.
