Not in nearly 12 years.

I've been noticing for a while now that I have to use it more and more frequently to achieve the same results.  Like... daily now.

I'm considering shaving and keeping it shaved for a month or so to let it figure out what its normal is supposed to be, but I'd rather not if anyone has any ideas how to break the cycle.

Afaik, it's best to change shampoo regularly. Otherwise you hair will 'get used to' it and it wouldn't be as effective.

Yes, I believe, in away, it is possible to become dependent. I have noticed personally that some dandruff shampoos are temporary relief for some forms of dandruff while another product will get rid of it long term if not all together.

What type do you use? When younger I had success with Denorex(sp?) and got rid of it. Later on in my twenties, and this is important, I shaved my head for a time. That was cool, but when I grew hair again, dandruff hit me with a vengeance. After a few years of the tried and true Denorex just temporarily curing it, and it getting worse; and trying other avenues, I tried Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment in the blue bottle. Dandruff gone! I have had the same bottle of Head and Shoulders for a few years now . . .

So mix up and try different shampoos maybe another one will meet your specific biology . . .

Then also I know that sometimes we think we have "dandruff" but we are not rinsing the shampoo out enough . . .

Be wary of shaving your head, unless you have in the past.

Change up and try different dandruff treatments, the active ingredients vary from product to product.

Be sure to rinse and repeat thoroughly

Just my two cents . . .

If its merely dry scalp, go a few days without shampooing to build up your natural skin oils.  That should alleviate the itching.

Its possible you have an allergic reaction to that particular shampoo.  Try another.

If none of the above help, go ask a dermatologist. 

I think you can build up a dependancy. Even worse, though, is that you go from dandruff shampoo to neutrogena, and the next thing you know, you're into hair gels and dyes.

That's why I stopped drinking it years ago.

Do you think you'll get dandruff-shampoo-withdrawal headaches or something? I wouldn't think it could happen.

more than you know.  it wasn't pretty.

selenium sulfide, the chemical used in anti-dandruff shampoo, is known to cause cancer in humans.

Well, at least I'm not drinking it.  Yet.
