Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

I know how you feel. I'm seriously considering putting my CPU upgrade costs to the Cube instead of the Tower. Why this thread is called what it is called. Cubes are beautiful. pcguy can hate em all he wants, just means more goods for the rest of us big_smile tongue. Been too busy to check that other thread too, wonder if it got locked yet lol.

Hey, did you see the thing Giga posted about the 7447a performance? Makes me still consider that 1.5Ghz 7457 since I plan to do some gaming with this. Its going to be interesting to see performance benches when ppl start getting these upgrades.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

I just spent an hour with he Cube, dismanting the enclosure and metal housing aperatus. Gave it all a wipe down with Windex and was carful to not leave finger print when putting it all back together.

It looks mint now, the previous owner cared for it very well. Many of the things I had thought were mold lines and scratches are gone after the Windex treatment. If there ever was a Cube I felt confident enough in to upgrade the snot out of it, this would be it.

As for the 7447A, yeah, I saw.

But I am still as gung-ho on the 1.7GHz upgrades as I was before. I knew the cache was going to make a nice little performance difference.

However, my logic on this is that not everything you do taps the L3 cache. Demanding things, such as video editing and Photoshop do, and games do as well to a lesser extent.

So on things that do tap cache, a 1.4~ GHz 7457 will be on par with the 1.7GHz 7447A. But there are so many things that benefit more from the raw clock speed advantage. From general Finder speed to things like SETI@Home, which I run constantly.

Basically I see it as the 1.4GHz being brought to the same performance level as the 1.7GHz 7447 in many instances. Meaning that at worst, the 7447 is tied with the 7457 in some tasks, but over all it will out perform it and it costs the same.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Well, I'm gonna end up doing something with the Cube. I just placed an order for a 120GB Hitachi from NewEgg and snagged a Radeon 9000 64MB Apple OEM from eBay for $62 with free shipping. And I placed the order for the DC/DC cable a few days ago.

Schwing.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Let me know how the VRM relocation goes. I know this is the first big thing I need to do before I can add faster GPUs. Where'd you buy the cable at?

Also, you using a Torx 10 driver or a flat head for the screws?

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

You can find the cable here. Search for item number 20276.

It's $7.99 and then equally more for shipping. Something like $13-14 in total. Yeah, I know, it's stupifyingly high to ship a cable.

I used a torx. I have a nice handful of them from 10 years worth of broken rings. wink

Don't know the numbers on 'em, just use whatever fits.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Well, I'm starting to think that the Cube is going to win the battle with the Digital Audio over which gets upgraded by me.

The only three people I have shown the Cube since it arrived almost fell over on the floor the moment they saw it. I get the same feeling.

Thnx for the links! Remember what is said about the length of those cables. Might have to cut yours to 6 inches.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Oh its easy. Just have a sharp knife and some electrical tape. I've spliced together wires a lot of times on my fan mods for my Beige. Course this is a lil different since theres a lot more power flowing thru it. But the concept is the same, just cut wires to the length you want them, strip the cut ends a lil and hook them back together then cover with electrical tape.

Oh be sure and remember what wires are which wink. The wires will work with the 12inch cable but if you check on CubeOwner you will find a few ppl posting about instability due to the extra length. 6inches is the ideal size it seems.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Hey I just had an idea. You know how you have to be aware of power consumption inside the Cube because of that VRM? Well, what about mounting a 2.5 inch Notebook drive inside a Cube?

I've checked some power requirements and they are half the watts of what the desktop models use. Sure they are not as fast and cost more but you'd also be opening up more space inside for air flow alongwith a few extra watts for something else.

Anyone else got any input on this idea?

Yeah, but there is only so much performance I am willing to give up for the sake of heat and power consumption and I draw the line at going with a notebook hard drive.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Have you seen the new SCSI notebook drives? You won't be giving up an awful lot with those... And considering that the Cube is merely ATA/66, pretty soon you'll be seeing notebook drives that can pump more data than the Cube can handle.

The time is coming...

PL just released a video of a system running @ dual 1.5GHz.

Clicky, clicky.

Oh, and the system in the video only has a Rage 128 and 256MBs of RAM. Imagine the speed of a maxed system...

That's not a Cube, it's a PowerMac. Big deal, there have been dual G4 upgrades for PowerMacs for ages, now.

I must say I find it typical PowerLogix behavior. They have been saying for ages that they will release dual G4 upgrades for Cubes, "any moment now." Several times have they posted stuff like "we can't give an exact date, but expect an announcement somewhere in the next month or so," only to hear absolutely nothing out of them after that. The famed replacement VRM's that were "being developed," then later even "being tested, and tests are looking good" never shipped either. Suddenly, they might have never existed as far as PowerLogix were concerned.

And then these announcements of actual shipping 1.7 GHz upgrades from GigaDesigns and Sonnet. What is the first thing we hear from PowerLogix (by way of dear ol' Laurie, who appears to be more than a little in bed with PowerLogix)? "Oh, but the forthcoming PowerLogix upgrades are on par with these and they're about to release something even better, real soon now." Real soon now in PowerLogix-land apparently means either "never" or "sometime in the future and it'll burn your computer to a crisp."

That picure is nice, but there was a schematic/PCB layout thats corresponds to that design floating around the CubeOwner forums many moons ago. Somehow, they still haven't brought it to market. PowerLogix seriously need to get their smurf together. I'm gonna need to read a ton, make that several tons, of positive customer reviews and no negative oines for a long time before I trust any of their products.

Well PL just transfered some of its operations to OWC to handle. Good news there, should help with a lot of the support issues and quality control problems that ppl have had with PL.

Other than disappointing performance and OS9 booting problems (Apple's fault here), i've had no problems with my FX800. Clocked to 917Mhz and running good at that for over a year.

Yeah, I've not been impressed with PowerLogix over all for the past year or two. To me, their shining spot has been on ZIFs, with the decision to raise the bar with G3 upgrades. I've had both a 750FX and 750GX ZIF and both worked flawlessly and were worth every penny.

I'd like to see PowerLogix turn around and impress me with the rest of their products as well.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Well PL just transfered some of its operations to OWC to handle. Good news there, should help with a lot of the support issues and quality control problems that ppl have had with PL.

Okay, first PL smurfed up with the PowerBook upgrades, lots of people stranded, angry customers, etc. Then the Cube upgrades came along. I warned on the CubeList about PL's reputation, and got laughed at. Next thing you know, Cubes are burning up left, right and center. People are up in arms. PL support smurfs up royally.

We are then informed that PL transfered all of its sales and support tasks to WayPoint. This to solve all the troubles they've had in the end, they're just going to mind the technical side of business, leaving everything else to WayPoint. After a promising start, WayPoint eventually give up, and hand everything back to PowerLogix. The support issues continue. PL now sue WayPoint, accuse them of being the source of all the troubles, which continue nonetheless (and had started long before WayPoint even came into the picture).

So now I'm going to have to believe that OWC will make everything, just like that? IS this the same OWC that, not too long ago, stopped carrying PL products because of the troubles they were causing? well, I like OWC, have done good business with them, but if I were them, I'd be mightily cautious about this.

Re: Say Cube is beautiful!

Well Waypoint was a mistake for sure. They really screwed PL a lot on the support areas. Worried me when Giga started using them but suddenly things are all working fine until that court case came up.

I wouldn't totally believe PL can turn things around with OWC but OWC is a big step in the right direction. It does restore some confidence for me in PL. Enough where I might consider one of their upgrades for my Cube but only after i've seen the reviews.
