Bad Drive
I got a fairly big problem. Recently I sub-letted my room and told the woman that she was not to use my computer, a Bondi iMac 233. Previously the HD had been playing up and was not working too well. It is a Maxtor 30GB that I'd put in a couple of years ago or so. I came back from my travels and she left a note saying that she used it straight after I left and now it's not working. She is right. I can boot up from CD's but the HD makes a terrible churning/clicking noise. I cannot get access to it all. Disc warrior doesn't even recognize it, nor Disc First Aid or Disc Utility. Needless to say I'm a bit annoyed, but apart from ragging on her I want to fix the problem. Any ideas? I'm in the Boston area so if any knows where I can take it, if necessary, that'd be helpful.
Thanks.

Re: Bad Drive
can't tell you where to get it fixed, but get it looked at ASAP, don't want no hard drive blowing up or destroying other computer parts (It has happened before)

Re: Bad Drive
It really depends on how much you're willing to pay. Depending on how bad the drive is fragged, it could go from $75-$100 all the way up to $1K+ to save the data. A quicjkie google search (mac repair boston) brought these guys up as the first choice http://www.twomacguys.com/icontact.html
You can give them a try or do the same search & try the others it brings up.

Re: Bad Drive
Fast just figure that every thing on that drive is lost and go buy a generic IDE ATA 66 or faster up to 133 drive from any PC shop, put it in and start over. Those recovery shops charge a small fortune and unless you were running a business and it was full of business info that you should have backed up, figure it as lost. I have seen pictures of wind chimes made out of the platters.

Re: Bad Drive
Yeah I've about given up. I sent the twomac guys link above an email and they told me they don't do recovery and gave me a link to www.drivesavers.com which appears to be a very expensive option. I guess I'll get a new drive but I'm reluctant to get another Maxtor, though I suppose I may have just been unlucky. Any recommendations?

Re: Bad Drive
You might still want to try elsewhere. I'm in n the WDC area, and my fathers Performa HD went "dead" on him. We went to a local (WDC, Baltimore Philadelphia) company who took a look at it & were able to save the data for $75 (including labor & CD-R they burned it to). If whatever you lost on that HD has any sort of value or would be a BEAR to replace, then checking a few repair places wouldn't hurt. (Local yellow pages was where I found the place we used. Again, any place that starts with "Mac" (duh) is worth a call). Of course if the data isn't really important, then it's way cheaper to get a way bigger HD.
As far as Hard drives go, I've used both Maxtor and Quantum (taken over by Maxtor) & never had any problems. Only real problems I've heard with any make tend to be with certain models/lines of hard drives, not the whole product line (forget the model, but some IBM series had MASSIVE problems).

Re: Bad Drive
I would just get a new drive. The $75 you would spend on data recovery would still most likely leave you with a dead hard drive. Unless you have some super secret government documents, I would just trash the drive (and I mean really trash it... sledge hammer and all) and get a new one.
This article is really worth a read if you plan on selling/disposing a used hard drive...
