Detention?.....Well, at my JH/HS We do have a news Channel, 2 actually, except they are done by the journalism, And a News Website hosted with .mac, 2 full featured Journalism Studio's with G5's, $5000 sony cameras(which may i add were the ones used in the olympics)...a Brand new boom camera, a 60,000 dollar mixing board, man we are lucky. That's what you get when you know the Superintendent of the schools and the HS teacher used to work at techTV. Pubic School must suck for some of you.
Stuff it.
Spirit was crushed; now is fading, But I want to help make things right.

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
Its a lot easier to revolt at a public school. For instance, pep rallies. For some reason we have to go to pep rallies to support the jocks (but the jocks never have to go to band concerts.) They had an article in the school paper (The Falcon Voice) about how great pep rallies are. I wrote in a Letter to the Editor, and it actually got published.
Dear Falcon Voice editors,
I am writing in response to
What do we want?! Brains! When do we want it!? Brains!

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
UGH I remember channel one - my High School added it 6 years ago (long since graduated away from it) 2 years we had that smurf force fed to us. In the beginning, for the first week or so we watched it, and it was amusing - then I noticed just how much of it was commercials, how much of it was propaganda or outright lies and misinformation, I started ignoring the TV and doing work for other classes instead. THe smurfy thing was that the administration cut into our lunch period to fit it.
One teacher didn't care - and let us watch or ignore it at will, another the next year turned it off and lectured over it for a whole 2 weeks before the administration strong armed him into showing it. The third year my teacher made us watch, and had us answer a couple of rote questions about it. I HATED that, and refused to do it - cost me a whole letter grade in the class, my parents and I literally yelled at the principal and vice-principle over that one for a good half-hour and convinced them to raise my grade in that class. smurfing propaganda!
There is some solace in knowing that some things just can't be attained by throwing piles of money at them in the name of corporate greed. --CaptKevMan

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
Yeah I remember having to watch that all through JH. Man did I hate that show. I believe the whole school hated the show, but for some odd reason they kept playing it.
Then in HS I think they had it play at the beginning of the day during first period. I'm not sure since I had the same class all four years and our teacher rather watch CNN on our 37" TV
(even though it was hooked up to a gateway
) or actualy teach the class and let us learn about something that teaches us something. It was nice having a teacher who didn't enjoy the channel as much as the rest of the students.

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
i have never heard of channel 1 news.
our high school doesnt even have its own news program.
There are only 2 macs in the HS and they are both owned by teachers who bought them themselves.

Wow, all of that for a High School... I'd like to see some of the productions they turn out. All that seems like an awful waste for a bunch of beginners who would probably be better off learning the basics on simpler, yet just as effective equipment. Also $5000 isn't much for a studio camera, even an ENG camera for that matter. Also considering that the Olympics were simulcast in HD this year there is no way they were using $5000 cameras. More like twelve times that, if not more. Beyond that, good for your school, sounds like they have a better setup than a lot of local news stations have around the country.
Back on track.
This is the first I've ever heard of CH 1. Sounds like some crap to me though. Contracts between large corporations and schools. The schools get money as long as they shove the sell down the kids throats. If you seriously wanted to raise concern I would write a letter listing them: Number one should be that you do not feel that taking in news from one viewpoint, especially one that has a commercial interest in its audience, is fair and balanced. If they want to teach kids about current events and media, great! But you cannot accept the reporting of one agency to be the 100% truth. It might all be fact, but it is all about how it is presented. So maybe they should let you watch CNN, BBC, or even Fox News a couple days a week rather than CH. 1 and let you determine what you want to believe yourself.
I'm very curious about this Channel One now. Do they actually show ads, or "sponsored by" bits? Do they gather their own news or do they get it from another source? (AP, CNN, ABC etc...) What is their delivery method? Satellite? Cable? Microwave? Do they only do news, or do they produce other programing too? Do they pass themselves off as a non-profit organization?
I don't think any of the schools locally have it, but we do have ITV. It is run by the county school board. I can't give an unbiased opinion of the programming as I work for the mentioned organization and have worked on some ITV productions. I will say they tend to avoid news a bit and lean towards the left more than one would expect when they do. Their main purpose is to produce educational and community based programing. Those of you from San Diego have probably at least heard of MathVision.

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
We have Channel one in our school. Some teachers require you to be silent when it's on and some just don't care. I've been lucky enough to work the system to where I never have to go to seminar, which means I'm never subjected to channel one. I just sit down in the lunch room and play poker or sleep when those idiots are funneling the masses into classrooms to "watch the news".
On the subject of pep rallies and why they suck, we had that issue over homecoming last year and it was huge. A few students wrote a letter to the editor that said teachers are biased in favor of the jocks, and when the teachers responded with a letter to the editor the editor published their letter with a note that he supports the students.

Re: "Channel One News" in private schools.
I never heard of this before it is quite intreasting that the american media would have such an influence on your school system. I am quite horrified an appaled by this. The most product placement we have in Canadian High schools is either Coc-a-Cola or Pepsi machines. And the only media i have had to watch was the Movies telling you to make sure that you are always wearing a rubber. HMM Oh well I like it the way it is up here, you guys should probally fight it for all you are worth cause it will only get worse. The Media can be a B***h somtimes. Man that is a weird school system.
Well that is my two cents
