Re: World of Warcraft Update!

I can't wait to check out WoW. I'm in EQ Mac now and it's fun and all, but WoW will actually be a new game instead of something 4 years old that's just recycled...

New game.

Right.

No one's EVER seen Orcs, Trolls, or Gnomes in an MMORPG before.

It amazes me that there is controversey over the excitement about GarageBand, and yet no one thinks to question salivating over Yet Another Fantasy MMORPG.

There will be nothing to do but hack, slash, level, and chat. MMORPGs are broken, people. Don't pay them $15 a month to rediscover this.

Re: World of Warcraft Update!

What's cheaper, a monthly subscription to a MMORPG which one might play for several hours each week, or a cable TV subscription which some people might only spend a few hours a week watching select shows?  For those people who spend a considerable amount of time playing MMORPG, the price/time ratio weighs heavily in favor of MMORPGs.

personally i'm not a big fan of the "pay to buy our software, then pay to use it" philosophy, but to each their own. just seems rather microsoftian to me, that's all.

I was comparing WoW to EverQuest, not games in general. If you want to  make a more original MMORPG, go for it. Till then, I'll take what I'm given and appreciate the fact that such a cool game like this is even brought to our platform at all.

It costs money to operate all of those servers the people are connected to.  They must pay a tech support staff.  They are constantly improving and updating the game with new things.  You can't do all that for free month after month.

I think it's great that you've obviously had a lot of experience with this game.  I'm sure you've put in a lot of hours reading about it and actually playing the finished product.  I mean, how else could you know that it offers nothing new or different?  I'm sure you're not the kind of person who would make a complete ass out of himself by making such an incredibly broad and general assumption.  Heavens no, you're much too smart for that.  neutral

that's fine, i know why they have to charge a subscription. it'd be better if the software was free for download, or available for 5-10 bucks on a cd mailed to your house; then paying for the ability to use it makes more sense to me. but then, this is all just semantics.

I never claimed to have more intelligence than opinion. wink

that said, i've yet to see an MMORPG that's anything more than an animated chat room with a combat system grafted on. With the exception of The Sims Online, which lacks even a combat system. each game that has come along has sought to find something that differentiates it, and each such refinement has more or less been deemed a failure.

The tip system in Star Wars Galaxies is a perfect example. It didn't work because no one tipped, but it was difficult to get experience without tips. So you wind up with people writing bots to get experience while they sleep. And people reverted to hack n slashing.

The Sims online, once you've built your house, is the Palace with better graphics.

I see nothing in WoW that looks like it'll break that trend. But hey, if that's how you wanna spend $15 a month, more power.

Not "microsoftian" (as you put it) at all. You pay for the software to cover the cost of the intial game design, advertisement, shipping, packaging, etc.

Next you pay a monthly fee (usually the first month is free so you don't have to pay for the software AND the subscription right off the bat.)  to cover the costs of server maintenance, the salaries of those who run the servers, the programmers that continually add new content and fix bugs. Oh, they might even make a bit of money too.

I don't know how Sony handles bots anymore (they have four games so who knows), but Blizzard has already permanently banned over 300 accounts due to folks cheating with bots.

I only wish they would do more than ban the account; instead they should ban the person and their credit cards as well.

I put cheaters in the same catagory as liars and theives (unless you are starving and need food - not even I am that inconsiderate).

Well... I don't care if you ARE buying subscriptions from Bat... or something.  You are standing alone in a graveyard talking to the headstones not to a group of forum dwellers.  If you raise this zombie it will eat your brains for sure, good thing I came along and saved you!  Please refer to the A year lost sticky above.
