Why release Keynote when they have Appleworks?
I just realized that Appleworks has that presentation feature. Why wouldn't they just give Appleworks a huge update like so many people (including me) want?
You think they've abandoned Appleworks? It seems so redundant, inefficient, so un-Apple to release to apps with the same purpose.

Re: Why release Keynote when they have Appleworks?
Actually, that gets me thinking that maybe in the next significant Appleworks update, Apple will instead break it up into 3 or 4 separate apps, a la office. So they could have something like Keynote, Datasheet, and Appleword or something.

Re: Why release Keynote when they have Appleworks?
No, they haven't abondened appleworks I don't think. It just sounds better when you announce keynote than a new appleworks. Plus, they were able to announce it without having the rest of appleworks done. I think this is a sign of Apple making something more office like. Maybe Appleworks will be dead in name, but it will go on, possiboly in a more office-esque fashion though.

I was hoping for an Office clone -- Apple style -- in the near future.
Or maybe at least an Office v.X update this year.

Sounds good! Looks like they're phasing out Microsoft after all.
OOOH OOOH What if they've been working on all kinds of stuff for a long, long time in expectation of their contract running out with MS?
So they've got a replacement for IE and all the Office apps, and they'll release them a couple at a time each Macworld?
Aw man, that would be so cool
Maybe they'll finish up with a replacement for Xbox, or...
Windows...
Marklar, anyone? Oh man, I am on!
AAAAAH I should post in the Rumormill with this topic

Well, Steve-o Wonder did say he'd been beta-testing it for a year... Which means they've had a working version for that long... Could be!

Keep in mind that M$ has Works and Office.
I like what they're doing. Have basic stuff for consumers in AppleWorks, then put the HARDCORE APPLE GENIUS STUFF in apps like Keynote etc.
Names for the followup apps:
Spread'em (spreadsheet)
BeTheBard (word processor)
TattooParlour (drawing)
AerosolCan (paint)
Big Metal File Cabinet (database)

They don't serve the same purpose. The iApps are for consumers, the Pro apps are for pros. Most companies do this nowadays.
And OS X Server is practically a whole different os. sort of.

Presentation in AppleWorks is for consumers and Keynote is for pros. Some people, like students, dont' need to spend $100 on Keynote for a casual school presentation.
I hope Apple updates AppleWorks and releases new office type apps. Maybe a word processor thats integrated with Address Book and Mail and iCal, a spreadsheet thats integrated with the wordprocessor, a database program thats integrated with a web server or something.

They want to make more money
I think Apple works will get a major update soon enough, I think they're just thinking of ways to give Microsoft Office a run for their money... Keynote is one of those ways!

OS X Server is a whole different OS, the difference is a few more utility apps and a few hundred more dollars

Continuing the Keynote naming style, Apple's word processor will be called Thesis. At least, that's what I hope.

Or they would release 3 or 4 different, separate pro apps like Keynote and update to Appleworks 6.3 or 7.0 for consumer.
