What if nothing is out there?

Really.
I have read some of these threads. Many have been doing this for 1, 2 years, perhaps more.

What, if all this time, there is nothing to be found?

Natch, your first response may be, "well, what if there is something out there?" True, then perhaps you would have some galaxy named after you for having discovered it, maybe a planetarium erected in your honor.

But what if there isn't? I don't know what to believe. What makes you believe it enough to let your machines run on and on?

Re: What if nothing is out there?

For me, it's not belief, but the fact that the computer is going to be on anyway. SETI is just something to keep the computer from being bored. If I help find ET, that'll be neat. If not, no biggie.

Re: What if nothing is out there?

I mostly did it for the competition, my computer[s] always sat on at night, doing nothing really, and I thought for a few more dollars per month, that I could have some fun competing with others on the team, and our team competing against other teams, for a common cause. And why not? Most people machines just sit idle for a majority of the time, and the extra cost is so minimal.

I've read [someone correct me if I've gotten the statistic wrong] that the extra cost involved is a mere $4 per month, depending on the processor[s] for a single computer.

I've now pretty much converted over to Folding@Home, for the cause, and for the new competitiveness of the project. Although I do have a small pool of computers running S@H simply because they run Classic. They do not add to my personal account anymore, I set up a new account for them. As they fade away [the computers], my WU production will halt, and I'm sure I'll fall lower and lower in the charts. But it was a fun ride to get near the top, which I look forward to with F@H.

Information on F@H can be found by clicking on links in my signature, if you're not interested, but are still sky watching, good luck to you and to Team MacAddict, the greatest Mac Enthusiast magazine in the world, IMHO!

Damn it!  If there were one post of mine that I could bring back, just one, it would be the one that I used to reply to this thread.

So I

I've been an adamant SETI@Home proponent since 2001 and I still love being able to say that I am a participant.

Re: What if nothing is out there?

I think that there's something out there. I ran Seti@home from January 14th 2000 until October 19th 2004, hitting 5004 WUs. I decided to switch to folding, and do something that could make a difference (:

Re: What if nothing is out there?

"What if . . ." has driven people to make great discoveries. Along they way, even more failures. Curiosity is the force behind SETI. My computer is on anyway; so what does it hurt?  Hey, I play the lottery on occasion too, but I don

Re: What if nothing is out there?

I am now running Boinc and decided to add einstein@home to my Seti@home work. Maybe if they actually do add F@H into the boinc fold I will do that as well.
