Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
Head and Shoulders and Denorex are both Pyrithione Zinc, not selenium sulfide. Far less with the side effects.

just steer clear of the "intensive "treatment" version of head and shoulders
shampoo recommendations based on their chemical makeup (and the chemicals in them)
oh, and stay away from Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
mmm hydrochloric acid...

I seem to have accidently hit on a solution to this.
Johnson's Baby shampoo. You know, that yellow stuff that comes in the bottle that says "No More Tears."
It seems to be doing the trick.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
If its merely dry scalp, go a few days without shampooing to build up your natural skin oils. That should alleviate the itching.
Its possible you have an allergic reaction to that particular shampoo. Try another.
If none of the above help, go ask a dermatologist.
Any generic baby shampoo should help. Dove now makes a gentle shampoo too. And if you can stand the smell, warmed olive oil on your scalp (before, not after shampooing) should help. You can try alternating an olive oil massage and (ironically) an oatmeal "cap" for 8 nights. That is a way to treat "cradle cap" -- which is what you have, undoubtedly. Leave each on for as long as possible (2 hrs. maybe).
If all else fails, can you soak your scalp in a warm sea salt bath for a minimum of 40 minutes? Light treatments at a dermatologist or even a tanning salon might (might) also help.
Avoid Neutrogena T-Gel (tar shampoo) for a while. It (or it's generic equivalent) works well for regular dandruff (which is worst in the winter, of course). But as Kirk says, you might be having an allergic reaction to formaldehyde, tar, or lanolin in your hair product. Also, if you are wearing head cover, consider not doing so; if you aren't, consider doing so. Process of elimination works best for sebhorheic (sp?) dermatitis and eczema.
I don't much like internal drugs, but Eladil might also help. A cortizone cream (topical on a bald or crew-cut scalp) could possibly work too, but ask a dermatologist first. And even for people who don't have severe dandruff, it's always a good idea to alternate shampoos and conditioners.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
I think you can build up a dependancy. Even worse, though, is that you go from dandruff shampoo to neutrogena, and the next thing you know, you're into hair gels and dyes.
That's why I stopped drinking it years ago.
Someone think of the children!! We need TV Afterschool Specials, warning kids against dandruff shampoo, the "gateway" to hair care products!!!!!one!!!
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo Dependency
I tried Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo and it sure was invigorating, but now my dandruff is worse than ever. Gah! I'm going to try baby shampoo now.
It places the lotion in the basket
