wow, that's beginning to explain a lot...

I was wondering why last night was such a bummer online.

Re: Internet got jacked last night

It was a security hole in MS SQL Server, that MS had released a patch for in July last year. Apparently a whole lot of sysadmins didn't feel the need to apply the patch.

They do now.

This is really the fault of the lazy sysadmins who can't keep up with patches, even six months after they're released.

The exploit went in through port 1434, the MS SQL S port, and tied up the host with fake requests for data (or something like that). As such, hosts weren't able to serve other data requests, like DNS info or pass along network packets. Hence the blockage of the Internet.

I wonder how long it'll be before someone write a worm with a payload that actually causes damage. This one was nothing. Imagine this with a payload that spewed out SQL table data randomly out to IP addresses. Suddenly you've got personal info, corporate info, credit cards and other stuff being sent around the Internet. Or imagine if it started to wipe tables or delete files.

We've been spared these nasty effects purely out of the niceness of virus and worm authors. They won't always be so nice.
