All I can seem to locate in their store are drives for the Xserve.

Probly not. I usually buy thru googlegear.com or newegg.com. You could always go to ChumpUSA or something tho the prices are ridiculous if they're not having a sale.

Thanks pottymouth. Also, are Maxtor drives any good, or can you recommend a manufacturer? Speed is not as important to me as stability is.

IBM is the best, Western Digital is close. Maxtor is better than a no name brand, but it's not great. If you really want the most stable HD, go for an IBM one. You get what you pay for.

The Seagate Barracuda IVs are also very stable, and dead quiet, you can't hear them at all in a tower. I had a WD Special Edition 80GB drive die on me after 9 days of use...and the new IBM Deskstars have a terrible reputation - they reccomend not using them for more than 8 hours a day because they've had so many failures! (wtf?) I'd say that Maxtor(bought Quantum) and Seagate are probably your best choice for a durable and quiet drive.

I disagree, but I guess a lot of it is just personal experiences, and the consensus of the people you have talked to. IBM definately has the best reputation though, even if the new deskstars are problematic, although I have heard nothing about this.

I've got a pair of the WD SE 80GBs. I love em. No failures yet (knock on wood). Everyone seems to have their own opinion on the best brand. I've never seen any actual test results and nobody can say for certain if a particular drive is likely to fail. Every company makes a bad batch once in a while. IBMs do seem to be regularly referred to as DeathStars tho : )

But didn't IBM sell off it's Hard drive division some time ago?

I'm pretty sure they did, so the quality may not be as good as it was.

I think IBM was getting sued for the Deskstars too.

IMO you can't go wrong with a Maxtor, Seagate or WD. Segates have the seashell shock protection which I like since my drives are rack mounted.

The 80G 8M buffer WD I got not too long ago benchmarks like a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive and It was about the same price on sale (Fry's)

I've bought several WDs and have no complaints. I've also had good luck with Quantum drives. The main thing is, no matter which drive you buy, be sure to backup because you never know when one will take a nosedive and leave you completely hosed.

i remember on some storage forums that in general, the shipper was much more important than the manufacturer. (i was talking to a guy who worked in a small distribution shop) basically, if you want a reliable drive buy from a store you trust to ship it right and don't worry about the brand as much. (although like brands probably comes in handy when setting up raids) for instance, i now buy all my drives locally because of the warranty and there's less risk of fault through shipping.

And yeah, my dead WD was probably a freak stillborn drive. I have a new one now and it seems to be trucking along fine(touch wood). It is a nice drive when it's working smile

Specifically which model IBM are you talking about? I have three IBM's in my G4, two GXP75's and one GXP120. The two GXP75's are about two years old and I haven't had any trouble with them at all. the GXP120 is 2 months old and no trouble. I leave my computer running OS X 10.2.3 24/7.

GXP180's I believe are the newest. Other than someone saying they are no good, I haven't seen any written evidence. confused

The GXP75s are the main issue, though I think the GXP60s also had big problems. Some newer drives(I think) still come with suggestions to run them only 8 hours a day.

I don't know, there's tons of info out there about the issue. Some people got lucky with good drives and have had no problems, but LOTSof people have seen failures on these drives. I don't know about the newer IBM lines, they may be just fine, but a lot of people are using the 'approach with caution' strategy...

I have a Maxtor 40GB IDE I found on www.pricewatch.com . It is very nice. Fast and super cheap! I got it for only 53 bucks shipped. I don't know the exact specs but I love it. I have already used all but a gig of it smile .

Stay away from IBM drives. My GXP60 failed after only about 3 months. Stick to Western Digital or Seagate.

get a western digital, DONT GET A MAXTOR.. i've had 2 maxtors die, both had head crashes, both within 6 months of purchasing the drive... ibm... some of ibms drives are good, others are as bad as maxtor sad

Thanks Komrade for all the information. I'll stop recommending IBM until I see this situation turn around. Also, I'm not going to take any chances. Even though my drives have been working just fine, I'm going to get everything backed up and look for more reliable drives to replace with. eek
