Cable hook up, how to protect myself.
Well, not exactly for myself. I have a friend who has a new powerbook and she connects to the Internet with a cable modem. Does she need to do anything to protect her computer from being seen on the "cable network." I remember horror stories of people exposing their hard drives to their neighbors. I am pretty sure everything that can go wrong is "turned off" by default in OS X. Is this correct? I don't want to mislead her. Thanks.

Re: Cable hook up, how to protect myself.
AFIK most of the ports are closed by default now. Also, OS-X seems to be good on making sure all directeries have a proper set of permissions. If she got a router with a built in firewall it wouldn't be a bad idea, and I think in the Apple hosted software list there is a freeware utillity called Brickhouse which is a firewall for the client machine. But I'm sure someone else here will know much more about this than I if we can just keep your post/question from getting dropped of the first page.
What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
