Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
ok, ok... i subscribe to a lot of tech magazines.... sorry mac addict, but as the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. They are amazed at what the machine looks like. It's nice looking, i'll give it that, but it isn't as kick-ass as they make it out to be.
"When we saw Alienware's new case design, our hearts were all a-twitter"
You've got to be freakin' kidding me.... if this thing put "your heats all a-twitter" you must have creamed in your pants when you saw the g4 imac and the lastest line-up of powerbooks. Hell, for that matter, I submit that these people have been thrusted to orgasmic levels by apple's kick as invations in the design world of the past 5 years.
"alienware is on the front-line of an aesthetic movement that's sweeping the entire industry. What was once underground is now mainstream"
No smurf, welcome to where we have been for years... i wouldn't place alienware on the front lines of a war that has already be fought, won, and now has U.N. Sanction 128934.34 Rev. Q. Apple has proven that the look of a computer DOES matter to consumers. Who wants a lame ass beige box sitting there... anyway.. .just my two cents..
I couln't locate any pics of the Alienware Preditor, but you can see a small shot of it on the mag's home page. This thing even has a crappy ass half frontal door to cover all the drive bays... hardly revolutionary.

Re: Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
sorry, but not everyone wants an "elegant" looking computer- some want one that looks beastly. Some want a variety of colors and want to show off what's inside. Some want 6 or 7 drive bays to add an Audigy2, removable hard drives, a Zip250, and a media card reader in addition to their optical drives. Some don't like curves and would rather have a simple and clean Lian Li aluminum look. I believe it was Maximum PC that said in another case review: "we wished it had the functionality of the PowerMac case, but then this case is for people who probably aren't going to be interested in upgrading their computer, like a Mac user."
Which I've always wondered- why would Apple make an awesome and easy to access case if you can only do a minor upgrade to the PowerMac anyways?
Toshiba, VPR Matrix, Sony and a handful of others make very sleek laptops too- some an inch think, firewire, wireless network, Bluetooth, GeForce4GO, a widescreen, etc. yet they are cinsiderably faster than a Powerbook. I wonder why no one laughed at Steve when he said Apple was 2 years ahead of the compeition.

yeah, so it's twice as fast as a Mac and cheaper too- but doesn't run OS X.
is that what you're trying to say?

Yep! and No, its not cheaper, look at how much current Alienware systems cost, and compare this with the Powermacs at Applestore...

Re: Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
i would be inpressed by the alienware machine is they had actually made some major design improvements. why couldn't the put individual doors on the drives, make it easy to open... anything.. all they did was incorporate some air vents into the front in a maner that doesn't make the computer completely hideous. there isn't anything amazing about this thing at all. Of course they also have a few pages in the mag. about the Shuttle cube enclosure/systems. wow... my how things have changed, a few years ago this mag. and others like it wasted lots of paper and ink on how horrible the g4 cube was, and the design made it "doomed to fail." where i come from people like these are called hypocrites

I think it looks alright, but it's more beastly than elegant.

Re: Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe the color, but that's about it. I think it has a sort of cool art-deco look (again, if you look beyond the green color).
I find it interesting that Apple can put clear plastic handles on an otherwise mediocre minitower design and have its praises sung from the rooftops, but if any other computer maker does anything with its design, its derided as horrible. I should point out that I say that as the owner of a Yosemite. I also have an old Pentium II sitting next to it, a computer that's in a beige box, but has more PCI slots, more expandability, etc. than the Yosemite, but is no taller.
Just my 2 cents.

It's pretty cool looking, but the black bars over the back would have to go. Like reaching around the back of your PC isn't a pain in the first place, they put that obnoxious stuff in the way.
It is pretty cool though. Beats the hell out of beige and what a lot of other PC companies tried as far as "style"

I think it's supposed to be a cable-routing system. I actually think it's a good idea. You could get one of those plastic wire-routing tubes, and stuff everything in there. It also would keep you from putting the thing too close to the wall so it cools better.

Re: Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
i think some people are missing what i was saying. i think the thing looks good, but doesn't deserve the load-spewing the magazine gave it. i just find it ironic that if apple does something, it's dumb, they will surely go out of business for it, and it's just total crap.... but if someone else does it, it's just freakin' amazing. things such as the Alienware machine, and the Shuttle "cubes". ESPECIALLY THE CUBES!!!! apples does it first and way better and these jerks say "it looks nice, but doesn't have a place in the modern computing world" but now... lets do a 4 page spread on building one of the boxes.
I'll sum it up with a quote from a true american, John Wayne.
"They're long on mouth and short on ears."
Man, I don't know what makes them go. I just drive 'em.

Re: Maximum PC goes ga-ga over Alienware monstrosity...PREDATOR
That's the first original design Alienware has come out with in years. All of their other machines were just Antec cases with little alien logos plastered on them. That's not design; that's accessorizing.

OK, so I may be stupid, BUT - it looked like the front bay cover/door thing was covering audio jacks. Thats just stupid. If you are gonna have some badass soundsystem, you are going to want it plugged in, all the time. And so the door is pretty pointless. Looks cool though.

There are audio jacks in the back, also.

Ok, that works then. I got pissed at the Umax drive doors too. I guess they just aren't my style.

I do not see the point of putting doors over ports.
The iMacs had port doors for an amazing two revisions. We haven't see doors since.
Doors are basically just asking to get snapped off.
Otherwise, it looks okay. (A little like the just put green plastic around a metal box, but it is its own style I guess.)
