UTXMP - you want to try this mod! UPDATED 1/2/04
UTXMP is available! What this is is a version of XMP (eXtended Multi-Player originated for Unreal II) for the modern UT2K4 engine. XMP is a class based multi-player game. Read about it here and get the zip dl.
To install decompress the zip file giving you a folder titled UTXMP. Go to your UT2K4 program and CTRL-CLICK and select Show Package Contents. In the subsequent window create a new folder titled UTXMP at the same level as System, Textures etc. Now copy ALL of the contents of the UTXMP folder you dled to the UTXMP folder you created in Unreal Tournament 2004.app. Close the package contents.
To use UTXMP you need a launcher since the mod function in the Community menu of Mac UT2K4 doesn't work. Use either Santa Duck's launcher or role your own as below.
To make your own UTXMP launcher fire up Apple Script Editor and put this in:
Code:
do shell script "<your path to>/'Unreal Tournament 2004.app'/Contents/MacOS/'Unreal Tournament 2004' -userlogo=../UTXMP/Help/UTXMPLogo.bmp -mod=UTXMP"
The <your path to> part must be replaced by YOUR path to Unreal Tournament 2004.app. For example mine is this:
Code:
do shell script "/Applications/Games/UT2K4/'Unreal Tournament 2004.app'/Contents/MacOS/'Unreal Tournament 2004' -userlogo=../UTXMP/Help/UTXMPLogo.bmp -mod=UTXMP"
.
Once you have your script set compile it then save as an app with the Options unchecked.
There you have it

OK - I've grabbed this mod (it's way huge - over 300 MB!!!) and installed it and have played it a little bit. It seems conceptually like ONS, but with more resources to manage and, hence, a greater reliance on teamwork. It's not so complex that it's too imposing to get used to, so I can see it catching on. There's an odd bug where the view out a vehicle gun sight gradually rotates to the right as you shoot, but that's not a major issue. I'd need to play it more to know if it's something I'd stick with. Did I mention that it's a HUGE download?
Thanks for finding this one, Doc!

It's an awesome mod. I loved U2 with XMP, and it was awesome. heck it even played on a P3 1Ghz w/ Radeon 7500.

Keep in mind that it is a Public Beta, and there is a big bug with XMP-Garden that basically keeps you from going to the next map (on my PC, UT2004 crashed out shortly afterwords). Think Mac OS X Public Beta but with less bugs.
My new laptop:
1.8 GHz Athlon 64 Processor
512 MBs of RAM
64 MB nVidia Geforce4 440 chipset (not shared with system ram) (hauls @$$ though
)
40 Gig HD
15.4" Widescreen Display
Wireless 802.11g card (builtin)
24x CD-RW/8x DVD-ROM drive
