No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
Okay, 2G 10 gig iPod. iTunes won't recognize, nor will anything else. Cable still charges unit. I tried resetting, restarting, etc. Has anyone else had this happen and it turned out to be the cable? Please...so...scared

Reinstall iTunes?

Nah, I've tried it on 3 machines and disk utility/iPod restore doesn't recognize it either.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
It could be the cable... it power pins may be connected, but the data pins might be messed up. Have you tried it on another iPod, or with another iPod cable?
The 2G used a regular firewire cable didn't it? Just run down to your local computer store and buy a firewire cable, and see if that fixes the problem.
Or buy a new iPod.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
I've got another cable on the way, I'm just biting my nails until then. Apple's instructions say not to use anything but an original Apple ultra special cable, but that can't be right. Around here, it is impossible to find a 6 pin to 6 pin cable. I went to three stores.
Apple store in Green Hills, please be built quickly!

This is exactly how my 2G 10GB bit the dust, I wanted it to be the cable, or the software, or even the battery but nope...time for a new iPod for you too! I got the new 40GB pre-iPhoto model myself.

Oh, please don't say that!
I could have had a new one but the newer iPods and I don't get along. The touch sensitive iPod controls just get to me. I want my scuffed up and dirty pod to accept its new music, that's all!

You know touch controls are no more, right? The new iPods use the click wheels like the mini.
And despite what Apple says, any old FireWire cable works with those iPods.

That was how my iPod bit the dust. Thank goodness for warranties.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
Try forcing your iPod into firewire mode. First reset it, hold down the menu and play buttons until the Apple appears then quickly release those and hold down the forward and back buttons until the little ok to disconnect and check-mark appears. Try plugging it in then... If that still doesn't work and you want to be sure, repeat the above process only hold down the middle button with the forward and back buttons too... Wait until the Apple disappears and let go of those three buttons. The Pod will flash some cool stuff across the screen and present you with a diagnostic menu, use the forward, back and middle buttons to navigate.
Run test F. FIREWIRE, if it fails then you know, if it passes who knows.
So far my 2G 10GB is still holding up, I think the Hard Drive has some problems though
Check for refurbed 3Gs on the Apple store, they can be cheap when they have them. Plus I've been hearing that the LCDs on the 4Gs crack really easy and that isn't covered by warrantee.
Good Luck.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
Try both USB2 and Firewire connection schemes. Sometimes one will work when the other will not. Try different firewire and USB cables. Maybe you do have a bad cable. Try deleting the iPod.plist and itunes.plist files.
. . . and I'm moving this to DHH, where it belongs.

2Gs dont have USB2... Only firewire.

I know, but if I can afford a replacement, it's probably going to be a 3G. I know Apple would love it if their cables were the only ones that worked, but my $3 eBay ripoff should be here today.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
I was having the same problem and this fixed it:
Delete the following files: harddrive>Library>iPodConduitDefaults.plist and user>library>com.apple.iPod.plist. Restart the computer.
I didn't have to restart, but you may have to. It's worth a try, it sure worked on mine.
Good luck.

Re: No love in Ballon Help...anyone else's iPod do this?
Well, it's okay for now. I used a new cable and it synced perfectly.
