Bittorrent Posts

While P2P-related topics and posts are generally frown upon it's been decided since Bittorrent has demonstrated legitimate uses we will loosen the reins on topics and posts related to that program a bit. They will not be immediately shut down, edited, or erased. However keep in mind discussion of how to do illegal activities using Bittorrent is still forbidden. Additionally links to Bittorrent files will be subject to the same sort of rules other website and file links are. This means no pornographic material, no illegal material, and no links to Bittorrent sites that aggregate pornographic and illegal material.

I now leave this topic open so you can discuss it among yourselves.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

I've gotten it to work for some files, but you have to watch the sites closely and download what you want quickly because once nobody is seeding them anymore you just can't get them.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

BitTorrent sucks... it's only redeeming quality is that is is slightly more reliable than other p2p. But for legitimate purposes (like downloading the X-Plane demo) it's faster to just use the straight ftp or http download they have.

Nonsense.

When I finish my big huge DVD project, I'll have a 4.7 GB disc image that I want my online friends to be able to download. I don't have the bandwidth necessary to accomodate as many people necessary for such a large file.

This also goes for Linux Distros.

BitTorrent does not suck. At all.

And there's no way straight http or ftp transfers are faster. BitTorrent can easily get me 300kBps transfer speeds.

Try Azureus.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

for most purposes, bittorrent will be faster. mo, imagine everyone on the internet trying to get the x-plane demo. know how the sites always have a few mirrors? bittorrent is just like that, but everyone is a mirror and you automatically download from the fastest ones (even combinations of them for the fastest speed).

Re: Bittorrent Posts

the only people who think BT is so bad just haven't put the effort into learning some thing above extremely basic networking knowledge.  Learning to Port Forward and open up firewall settings are unnecessary for other p2p apps and the general internet user just wont go to those lengths. I myself have found BT to be extremely useful and awesomely reliable except in cases of abandoned torrents or extremely low seed levels.

Not necessarily. The official BitTorrent client never seems to get good transfer speeds. I know how to forward ports. I thought BitTorrent sucked until I found Azureus.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

Dunno if they make a Mac version but ABC (Another Bittorent Client) is just plain great. It has a pretty easy interface and it's easy to follow the progress on what you are downloading.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

If you throttle your upload, it's going to *hurt* your download speed(not help it) because you won't be able to send information to other computers in the swarm, and it's not good to have a share ratio of <1:1.

Regardless of that, though, BitTorrent frequently saturates my connection, while direct ftp and http transfers typically do not.

Think about this. The more people downloading a file by ftp or http, the slower the transfer. The more people downloading a file through BitTorrent, the faster the transfer.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

If you say so, but I don't throttle and my downloads are frequently in the high 200s (in kBps).

Re: Bittorrent Posts

What is the legal status of downloading tv shows currently?  If I miss the daily show, for example, is it illegal for me to download it from the net?  Is it a function of what cable I have at my house?

I'm pretty sure that qualifies as illegal.

As long as we're talking about bittorentz, might as well post some. Torretnz are an excellent means of distributing iso's and don't bleed as much bandwidth as regular http dl's...

sad  If only my max upload wasn't 15 kbps with a 400 kbps downstream.

you know the funny thing is, port forwarding never really improved my speeds, niether did Azureus, I like it because of the detal it can give me on the file coming down but it never has given me any faster speeds.

and mo'ron's claim of faster dl with throttled ul; just not true in my experience, they seem to have no effect in largely seeded files and a negative effect in small seeds.

Yes, BT does saturate your network and clog any kind of internet surfing but, if you dont shut your box off at night, then BT is great.

Re: Bittorrent Posts

the best thing about azureus is it lets you cap your total up and down speeds, so bt doesn't clog your network...

Re: Bittorrent Posts

The only time you should see download speeds increase when you throttle your upload is if you have a very smurfy service provider and/or very smurfy equipment.

This is most commonly seen in cable modems, especially the comcast/charter variety. If you have an RCA modem, just give up.
