Re: For any and all who want to get back at your PC friends...

Why are Mac users so angry?

Is it because their computers cost more and are a lot slower, and that Windows XP is stable and powerful and doesn't carry the same myths as Win95- so Macs users are without the same tired reasons they think Macs are better?  Is it because they subject themselves to the mini-monopoly known as Apple and have no choice but to purchase what Steve Jobs tells them to rather than admit defeat and buy a PC?

Why can't a Mac user just be a Mac user?  Instead they are always trying to compare themselves to a PC user.  The PC user doesn't give a crap, because he/she can walk into a Best Buy and spend $600 on a computer that is fast and has a huge variety of software and hardware available, and can be easily upgraded for many years.  Meanwhile the angry Mac user has to shop online, or drive for hours to rare retail stores and pay $2000 for a 800mhz machine with 4 small shelves of software to choose from, only to get home and find that you can't plug in your scanner.  So while they wait a year or two for driver support they go online and bitch and whine about how PCs suck because the icons are ugly and they used to crash a lot 5 years ago.

Re: For any and all who want to get back at your PC friends...

I was expecting the usual anti-PC thing, but that was quite funny.

As to dt's points - Apple cannot be defined as a monopoly in any way at all, unless you define every category as a monopoly, which is just silly. If they were a monopoly, you couldn't crow about marketshare - you'd have to accept that they had over 90% of the market that they're monopolising.

Last time I checked, sub-5% didn't exactly give Apple control over the entire computing industry.

If PC users don't care and are so much more mature, why do they continually keep coming over here to justify themselves by 'running the MacAddict gauntlet'? Is this a rite of passage? Do you somehow become an adult by doing this? Or is it just that you feel the need to be argumentative and self-righteous?

Re: For any and all who want to get back at your PC friends...

Is it because they subject themselves to the mini-monopoly known as Apple and have no choice but to purchase what Steve Jobs tells them to rather than admit defeat and buy a PC?

We buy our computers out of sheer joy.  You, as (I'm assuming) a PC user, have nothing compared to the experience Mac users get.  We're enthusiasts.  Addicts.  Not just Users.  You never get a PC Addict, do you?

Meanwhile the angry Mac user has to shop online, or drive for hours to rare retail stores

Over 85% of the US population lives within 15 mins of an Apple Store.  Plus shopping online is better anyway.

and pay $2000 for a 800mhz machine with 4 small shelves of software to choose from

Uh, 4 shelves?  Maybe at CompUSA, but at the above-mentioned Apple Store there is tons of software.  I'm not even going to go into the megahertz myth with you, as you seem to be, well, a...troll.  You also haven't noticed that Apple has a very similarly-specced computer for about $1000 that can beat the pants off a lot of PCs in terms of raw features and even speed in most cases.

, only to get home and find that you can't plug in your scanner.  So while they wait a year or two for driver support they go online and bitch and whine about how PCs suck because the icons are ugly and they used to crash a lot 5 years ago.

MacAddict = MacAngry

Can't plug in your scanner?  Mebbe if you have a scanner so old that it should be sleeping with the Lisas (in the garbage dump), but every major scanner manufacturer has given us drivers for OS X, and if not, for OS 9.

The PC sucks because of much more than "ugly icons" and "used to crash" (which they still do, although admittedly less than they used to).  At work, we went all-Mac because we just could put up with the little extra cost, while getting rid of the problem of endless tech-support (that we used to have - WinXP btw).

First of all, 2000 Pro is the most stable form of Windows there is.  And no one forces Mac users to buy whatever Steve Jobs wants them to.  They can buy PC's.  Mac OS X is still a far superior system than XP Pro or 2000 Pro (in my mind).  You don't have to agree with me, or anyone else, it's just a matter of opinion.

And just so you're aware, that wasn't created to appease whiny mac users.  I found out about that funny flash thing from a hardcore PC gamer who thought it was hilarious and (somewhat) true.

Re: For any and all who want to get back at your PC friends...

Apple cannot be defined as a monopoly in any way at all...

in the Mac world, Apple is a monopoly- they control what hardware and software you buy far more than a PC company ever could.  You can't upgrade a Mac's mainboard or CPU, you can't buy replacement parts, the most you save buying from macwarehouse or other dealers is $5.  They are even dropping support for OS 9 and new Macs won't be able to run classic mode.  Imagine if Microsoft said everyone had to upgrade to Win XP or none of your software would work- you'd all be posting about the evil empire.

You also haven't noticed that Apple has a very similarly-specced computer for about $1000 that can beat the pants off a lot of PCs in terms of raw features and even speed in most cases.

Go to bestbuy.com and find me a single PC for around- $1000 that is beat by an eMac or low end iMac.  That mere fact that they ship with a 700mhz CPU and only 128MB of SDRAM blasts your "even speed in most cases" comment.  Oh wait- you're joking.  very funny.

here's a good example:
HP desktop-
Athlon XP 2400+
512MB DDR
80 GB HD
16x DVD
40X CD-RW
6 USB 2.0 ports, 2 Firewire
GeForce4 MX with 64MB DDR
only $750 at BestBuy

that leaves $350 to buy an LCD monitor or 19 CRT if comparing to the $1100 eMac and iMac.

How does your foot taste?

The biggest load of bull I've ever heard.  Jobs specifically said that all Macs will still be able to run Classic mode, just won't be able to boot into OS 9.  You can upgrade a Mac's CPU.  You can buy replacement parts.  You can even build your own.  So shut up.

Imagine if Microsoft said everyone had to upgrade to Win XP or none of your software would work- you'd all be posting about the evil empire.

Upgrades are inevitable.  Most software (apart from Quark, which is just unbelievably crappy at getting upgrades out) works on OS X anyway.

Just shut up, doubletime.  You're not wanted here.  Troll.

Rubbish. Absolute garbage. A weak argument that fails in every respect.

To use your argument, any company competing in a sector has a monopoly on its own products.

People are fond of cars... so...

Ford have a monopoly on Ford cars. BMW have a monopoly on BMWs. Ferrari have a monopoly on Ferraris. And so it goes.

And you can't use many of the parts from one car in any other. I can't put a Ferrari engine in a VW-Beetle, or a VW-Bettle's exhaust on a Ford 4WD.

Monopolies!

Run for the hills! The entire automobile industry is a bunch of monopolies!

... All... competing... for consumers...

Hmm...

The whole argument about Apple being a monopoly conveniently fails to include the salient point that any Mac user can go and buy a PC (something you think we should all do - if it was a true monopoly, there'd be no meaningful competition). You would never be able to put this argument in court, or even in intelligent company, because it's so trivial to dismiss.

Macs may be expensive, have slow memory and have an over-emphasis on style and ease of use. What the Mac doesn't have, though, is a monopoly on desktop computing.

Claiming that Apple has a monopoly is tantamount to claiming that the entire PC industry, all the manufacturers and all the developers, are effectively no competition to Apple and are controlled by Apple. Now, I knew Apple were important, but I wouldn't have placed them so highly. It's nice that many PC users look up to Apple so much.

Re: For any and all who want to get back at your PC friends...

Mac users were studied, you can read why "peecee's" are the enemy:

http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/JCR/jo … 70402.html

I own a Mac but it hasn't impressed me, I was expecting more based on all the fan love.. so I don't get it, but as a hockey fan,  to me... many Mac users seem like sports fans, Apple is their team.

On the PC topic, although you can buy Mac parts.. you can't buy brand new new boxed Mac motherboards & CPU's. It's semantics, you know exactly what he intended.

DIY'ers it seems mostly don't get why anyone would buy a Mac,  thus talk the trash.

I'll be putting in an XP2800 next week, it'll cost me less than $300 and take 10 minutes.. to me that just makes too much sense, a PC is a great investment given all the upgrade paths.

Frankly I'd be going nutty if I was still running an 867Mhz G4 and faced with one of my only options to get more power is to buy a $3000 computer. I still have an Athlon 700 that runs as solid as they day I built it, but speed matters to me and when upgrading is so easy an inexpensive.. why not?

But that's me, I haven't been traumatized by Windows, I don't think MS is out to get me, all my PC's have run exceptionally well, and I'm not afraid to tear apart my PC.

I have one Mac owning friend, his retort to mocking is "My Mac is better for me"...  I accept that and we rarely discuss it. Why's that so hard for people to do?

But by doing that, you are pretty much killing your arguement for going PC over Mac. That being for cheapness. That 2800+ is quite a bit of money, yet a 2100+ can be had for under $100 pretty easily. And that 2100+, at 33% of the cost, provides about 80-85% of the performance of that 2800+ (After the rest of the systems componets are factored in, and considering that they are the same in each system).

I dont know...

I just tend to think that blowing that much money on any part of a PC other than the video card deafeats the purpose of owning one over a Mac completely and totally.

Yes, why is that so hard to do?  You seem to spend a lot of time in here telling us how inadequate our platform choice is.  Are you a competitor to Apple?  Are you paid to do this?  Just curious.
