Slow screen redraws in Photoshop in OSX......
I have a G4 - 400Mhz with 1GB of memory and 16MB of video memory. In OSX most applications move along quite nicely...even Photoshop. Files open quickly etc. My problem is that screen redraws are slow/clunky. I use Photoshop 18 hours a day for a living and this is unacceptable. Photoshop
flies on the same machine in 8.6 and on a separate drive with 9 on it. Any ideas on what I can do ? Is a faster Mac the ONLY solution ?

first, try restarting.
second, get a new video card. yours is crap.

Three questions:
1) Photoshop 7 I presume?
2) how big are the files that you are working on?
3) have you altered the amount of memory that PS will grab in it's preferences (PS7 only)?

Re: Slow screen redraws in Photoshop in OSX......
My first thought it that it'd be a memory problem, but with OS X and 1 gig of memory, I don't think that it's as likely. Do you only experience this problem in Photoshop?
Although, I did not know PS 7 had a memory allotment pref. Let us know if that fixes your problem.

pshaw. It's a Rage128, I assume, which would be perfectly adequate for photoshop (I say adequate, not sterling). The board alone would not be responsible for slow redraws.

Re: Slow screen redraws in Photoshop in OSX......
It didn't really help to up the memory allotment in Photoshop prefs. It feels
like I am working in slow motion. I find it hard to work like this. I have all the speed I need in OS9......even faster in 8.6. I have that on another volume and usually "work" in that version just because of the speed. I would like to work in OSX though. Thanks for the suggestions !

Re: Slow screen redraws in Photoshop in OSX......
I've recently noticed slowdowns in InDesign when I have my preferred fonts loaded (Helvetica is giving me fits).
Do you by chance have extra fonts loaded?
Also, are you in PS 7.0.1? And which version of OSX?
Not that it'll really help, I think we're all stumped on this one.
Have you looked around on the Adobe Fourms for an answer?
Also - how big are the files - I noticed that for huge honkin' files (650+ MB) that OS9 was still faster for me on a Dual Ghz Leafblower with 768MB Ram. The only benfit OSX held for me there is that I could surf the net while PS was thinking.
One last thought - there is a driver update from ATI that may help if the card you are using is an upgrade card and not the original that shipped with the Mac.

No extra fonts loaded.....and I am in 7.0.1 ......and OSX 10.2.
Yes it is worse with large files in Photoshop. I think OSX and PS 7 have a long way to go for professional use ( use it fast enough to make a living). The Rage 128 is original equipment.
I think I'll try the Adobe forums....tried before with no results.
Thanks for your post !
