MOSR: Tablet

Apple has Tablet-like prototype systems, but because of the present economic landscape, has no plans to release any such device to the public in 2003 - or at any firm point in the future, for that matter.

Sort of a good-news/bad-news thing, eh?

People (including me) were hoping tablets at MWSF, but I realize now it was too soon.

I can still hope, though big_smile

Re: MOSR: Tablet

We all Can.  but I think we agree, what I hope is that Apple plays it smart...  iTablet isn't out, but it mught end up like Cube 2, so I don't mind, and at first I was like, Apple?  an MP3 player?  but it took off, so taht was great...  It hink they may finally be making smart move after smort move...

Now if they could get the Processors up to snuff...

Re: MOSR: Tablet

Hmmmm, I don't know about this one. It would really depend on how much they had to spend on R&D costs for the tablet. If they've put enough time and energy into this thing, i would think they would have SOME type of release planned. Sure, it might not be right now, and maybe 6 months down the line, but I imagine if they've done all the work to R&D it and prototype it, SOMETHING would come of it.

But of course, if they didn't spend much money in the first place, then you're probably right.

Re: MOSR: Tablet

I'm really not sure if I would like a tablet PC.  I think the idea is cool, and I could like the lifestyle behind it - walking around just glancing down at info, and posting on MacAddict!  But I've gotten so used to typing, and my handwriting is awful!

It would have to be the right price for me to consider it, and weight of course!

I would definitely want some kind of docking station to turn it into a desktop/laptop config when i wanted.

Apple said this would be the year of the laptop. Think they consider a tablet a laptop? smile Maybe if it comes with MacBoy's attachment.

I'm with you. Why jot down notes onto an expensive piece of computer hardware when a pad of paper will do?

If the tablet is about the size (and power) of my iBook, why wouldn't I just use my iBook?

Tablets have a lot of gee-whiz factor, but actual usefulness? Nah.

Re: MOSR: Tablet

If I may quote myself...

Apple said this would be the year of the laptop. Think they consider a tablet a laptop? smile Maybe if it comes with MacBoy's attachment.

The PC industry sees the value and potential of a tablet line. What if Apple released the eBook? (The eMac is their only educational model, it doesn't really fit in unless they introduce an educational line like pro and consumer. They have the desktop, they just need the portable!)

They could distribute them to schools and contract some publishing companies to develop textbooks in PDF format. Imagine it! Teachers put homework and classwork in iCal, every student has a tablet with all their textbooks on it, they email all their homework in or upload it!

It would be great! (But I'm not sure what a tablet could do that a laptop couldn't in that situation... it's probably lighter...)

Re: MOSR: Tablet

I think tablets do have some appeal.  The most annoying thing about my powerbook is the fact that it opens up to become clumsy and overbalanced on my lap.  I wish there was a tablet that was one piece and accepted written input as well as having a virtual keyboard.(like the one they will soon release for PDAs.  Not to mention the obvious graphic applications of being able to draw right on the screen.  If a tablet could allow you to interact with graphic elements onscreen it would be fantastic.

Hey! How about a keyboard that would pop up on the screen that you could type into? I realize that a tablet is about the size of a compact keyboard, so you could have a button on the stylus (or somewhere, just like the insert drawing button) and a keyboard would come up. All the keys are pressure sensitive, and it leaves some room on the screen so you can still see what you're typing. I admit it wouldn't give the same feedback as a real keyboard, for example, you can't tell if you're between two keys when you hit one or if you even hit a key at all, since the screen is flat.

It would be nice though smile

Re: MOSR: Tablet

No, but I had a chance to use the HP thingy and It was cool...  Nice and light and easy to grab and read off of.  Almost all the same can be said about an iBook, but one hand to hold and one to operate, especially when standning is nice.  Lets just say, for some reason, i would downlaod the Times to a tablet and read it on the sibway, but not on an iBook....

I agree it would be great to read things like novels off of. Besides, you'd look totally futuristic and cool like all the movies big_smile

Besides handwriting recognition and that sort of thing?  Not really.  But I find it to be a much more intimate experience.  I also find it more convenient for what I like to do with computers- lots of reading and studying.  I have a ProGear 1050 HX+ by the way.

Yeah, exactly, he put that a lot more eloquently than I did.  For certian things it has no advantage and it even lasks in a few others, but for the things it has advantage in, it rules...

Re: MOSR: Tablet

I want Alias|Wavefront Sketchbook.

Whether Apple plays is economically safe or not, the revolution is starting without us, and when it comes time next year for me to start looking at new systems, if Apple doesn't have a tablet running Sketchbook or an equivalent, the remorse I will feel will be unequivocable. Apple.. please give me hope!  sad

Re: MOSR: Tablet

I think it's better if they wait to release a tablet PC.  Let other companies release a product before people are ready for it, and before the technology is there to give it a rich feature set.  Apple was hardly the first company to release an MP3 player, but they looked at what was out there, saw about a dozen ways to make it better, and released the best MP3 player ever built.

Let somebody else loose money on the next "newton".

Re: MOSR: Tablet

The purpose of a tablet is ultimate portablility - ever try using a laptop while standing up without a table?  I'm not talking about note taking either - use a handheld PC for that, but I mean real functionality.

It reminds me of the days when I used my Newton eMate 300 (remember those?!).  It had a curve on the side, and if you flipped the screen to side view, the curve would go right on your hip, and you could work really well with that setup - kinda like a tablet PC with a built-in keyboard.

I would definitely buy one if Apple came out  with it!
