apple and Burton jacket
What do you think about the jacket that Apple and Burton have just released? If Apple would be to produce a capsule cutting-edge collection would you buy a t-shirt, jeans around $150 ?

Re: apple and Burton jacket
no grazie. I don't need any iPod wear. Even if I had an iPod, I doubt I'd dress to match it.

This would be sweet if I had an iPod. I can't count the numerous times when I've needed music on the mountain.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
Have you seen it? I wouldn't really call it a jacket. More of a parka. 500 bucks and you still need to wear a half dozen layers under it.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
You obviously haven't tried one on. It's got like 4 layers of gore-tex and is very very warm. It's waterproof too. They make it light for a reason, Maneuverability. But I've tried it on and it is plenty warm. Burton has been doing this for a while, I think they've got it down.

Newer worn 3-layer Gore-tex, have you? That stuff seriously keeps cold wind, snow, water, etc. from getting through and chilling you to the bone. Wear a nice shirt or sweater under the Burton jacket and you'll be plenty warm, and plenty maneuverable. Maneuverability is why it's thin and light, but don't let that fool you; it won't keep you warm due to thickness or regular insulation methods, but instead through the magic of inpenetrable fabric. I don't know exactly how Gore-tex works, but it does. One layer will keep you warm to about freezing temperatures, and 2 or more layers will take you well below freezing, easily; so with 3 you're good for most winter conditions experienced while skiing and snowboarding.

Theres another Burton Jacket. It doesn't look like much and it's priced at 399, so this Apple/Burton endeavor isn't priced that bad.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
Apple should make a Burton iPod backpack. The only Burton item I can wear in this heat is a backpack, and it would be awesome if it had some iPod holder.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
I don't know exactly how Gore-tex works, but it does.
gore-tex works in microscopic ways... just like any fabric that is reasonably wearable, it contains millions of tiny holes, but in gore-tex's case, they are so small as to warrant calling them pores... they are big enough to allow molecules of sweat to come off the body and evaporate (thereby allowing the fabric to breathe and keeping sweat off your body, keeping you from freezing from your own body sweat) but just small enough to repel actual molecules of water from outer elements... it truly is an incredible material...
there is also gore windstopper which i don't believe is 100% waterproof but water resistant... that stuff is incredible when used in conjunction with regular WP gore-tex; well, its incredible by itself on cold, windy days, but on cold, windy, wet days it is incredibler
now, yeah, PVC lined jackets are waterproof, but try backpacking with that crap in the heat of a summer thunderstorm under the cover off trees that tend to trap in heat... ugh
suck it, trebek.

Yeah, with a head phone jack on one strap and a remote built in to the other...
That'd be great... Especially if it had an iBook/PowerBook sized sleve... (and if we really want to go crazy, a battery of it's own that the iPod can run off in place of it's own battery? the iPod is light, so a spare battery wouldn't add TOO much wieght)
But yeah, fear not, the AMP (that is the name of the iPod Jacket) is plenty warm... I have a similar build Burton jacket and it is great... warmer than most...

I've been wondering...(and I believe what you're all saying about the jacket)...in the case of the iPod...which doesn't put off any heat of it's own when being played, will IT stay warm enough in this jacket? It looks like there's a layer of gore-tex between the iPod and your body.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
I'm not sure Gore tex (Goretex?) actually insulates as much as it keeps you dry and lets your body's perspiration to not be trapped inside. Generally it is combined with Thinsulate which is the actual insulating material.
As far as an ipod not creating heat, I know mine does. When ever the ipod plays it gets warmer and if you are burning music onto it it can get very warm indeed.

It only gets hot when it's plugged into a machine. It's because the battery is charging, and the disk is constantly spinning.
During regular use, it does not get hot because it only spins up to buffer 32mb worth of audio, then spins back down...maybe a total of 10 seconds.

Yeah, like Macaddick said, mine does generate a little heat, and the Jacket does have an extra insulated little pocket for the iPod, enough to keep it warm I think and probably get you through a "yard sale" or two
... I think between the heat the iPod does generate and the little pocket for it, it would be alright...

It doesn't generate heat unless it's plugged into a Mac or PC.

Re: apple and Burton jacket
No heat? well, it seems warm...
I know it gets down right HOT when plugged in, but I also thinlk the specs you are talking about invlove it just playing from the library or playlist... Switching the song every few minutes, might cause it to spin more, cause I can tell you, there is a little warmth, I will concied a bit an not say heat, but surely warmth, and if you aren't taking your iPod out of the jacket and just hitting next song everytime you want to see what else you can hear, I bet the disk would be spinning more than it would if you just let it play from the library or a playlist where it could load 32 megs at a time and only spin up every 30 minutes, but I for one don't want to drop my iPod off a chairlift cuase I was trying to select a playlist with gloves on
, so'id probably leave it on ALL and just hit next song when I come across a song not fit for Boarding/skiing... Apple says that so to save battery life just let it play from a Playlist or the library to keep it from having to spin... so I bet my method of using the iPod might just generate warmth...
but i guess that it wouldn't if you weren't A.D.D. like me
