FinalCut Express... stopped working
i dont know how many of you could help. but i will still present the situation.
at the TV Station that I work at, (my dad owns it) we are deciding on something to replace our 10 year old VideoToaster (decked out amiga) to make commercials with... so our local apple retailer loaned us a brand new titanium with a "not for resale" version of Final Cut Express... I used it, made some short little ads... It seemed quite slow, but then again, the powerbook had only 256megs in it... so i quit the application, didn't bother to save what i was working on at the moment.. then i went to the screensaver and tripped out for five minutes.
got back to the computer and decided i wanted to work with final cut express some more... it gets as far as opening up one of the preview windows... then it unexpectedly quits...
again
and
again.
wont work
at all.
curses.

Re: FinalCut Express... stopped working
I'm not exactly what you mean by "use the power", but if you mean use both processors efficiently, then yes, it definately would. Final Cut Pro is the like the poster child for Dual Processors and Altivec.

Re: FinalCut Express... stopped working
That's weird because I use FCP in OS 9 a lot and it never crashes or has problems. FCP is specially tweaked for the G4, and I would assume FCE is too, so that is really strange that you're having all these problems.

Re: FinalCut Express... stopped working
alright... deleting the prefs fixed it...
now the problem is... with the sony VX-1000 ... when i hook it up to the computer (and it is in VTR mode) the videocamera says "DV IN" okay, (that's not the problem, thats fine) but the moment i start finalcut express it starts sending a crappy signal to the camera with a bunch of digital gigantic white pixels just passing across the camera viewfinder and the sound popping every 4 seconds, left channel, then right, then left... all the while the white crap is going across my screen (sort of similar to what it looks like if you were rewinding the footage on a minidv) when i print to the camera the white pixelly stuff is still there and the audio still pops every several seconds (over the edited video) , gah!
i really want to get a mac and finalcut anything, but it won't be a worthy investment if we cant even put the ads back onto the camera!\
oh well

man oh man... initialize the drive, and reinstall OSX... then install your FCE. I have a feeling that your drive is so severely fragmented, that the system is working double time just to bring in the signal from the camera.
Next, install the FCE and nothing else for the time being.... work on your project, export it, and then finish installing the rest of the apps that you normally use.

Re: FinalCut Express... stopped working
Any digital device will get flaky if it's OFF during FC startup, then (after FC is running) you turn the device ON. This is not a 100 percent certainty, but it happens often enough to be problematic.
Also, if while in FC a device is shut off, then turned back on, the problem you're having wouldn't be unusual.
Best bet, make sure you cam is on and launch FC after a reboot...then dump your project to tape.
BTW, I've had corrupted prefs about 2 times in 1 year...just be aware.

Re: FinalCut Express... stopped working
well it is possible about the drive being fragmented... or something or other.. it has been the display model at a computers store and has probably seen every single update since it was released...
i tested the camera situation all sorts of ways.. camera on at from startup all the way through finalcut being opened... having it off.. opening finalcut then turning the camera on... but evertime finalcut opens and the camcorder is connected and on it gets a screen full of flakypoo

This is not really an answer to your question, but may help. This is a link to Apple's web page that shows which cameras are "qualified" for use with "Final Cut Pro". I suspect it would be the same for "Final Cut Express" and iMovie. I didn't see a Sony VX-1000 on the list. It may have another name that you will recognize. Good luck.
