Re: Gates donates $750 million
I could use a donation right about now... but the kids are more important. We're not talking about blood money here. Last I heard, Bill wasn't growing poppies in Iraq or sending planes into skyscrapers. His money is good with me. I'll take a check from Bill or Steve... and cash it.

Um, no actually. Not at all. Bill Gates has about 45 billion total. The US government brings in about 10 trillion every year. It's not even close.

You must be incredibly poor then. $750 Million is about 1/6th of Gates money. I'm guessing that if you have a Mac (or any computer for that matter) then you have more than $120.

Not giving much? Since when is 750 million, "Not much?" Holy Toledo! Are you nuts?!
Could he have given more? Well, probably. But so what? Let's keep in mind our fearless leader, Mr. Bush, gave a whopping 10G.
The fact still remains: $750million is boo-ko bucks. Who cares why he gave it or what more he could have given. I'll bet the recipients couldn't care less.

Yes...with Windows. Countless times my PC has frozen on me when I'm working on video editing, graphics, or adding special effects, and its top of the line, but has Windows XP Media Center Edition on it. The freezes cause me to loose my work up to my previous save.
So what if he has a completely dominant business. If Apple had his power, none of you would be complaining. Apple is trying to gain complete control of the Audio Player market and no one here is complaining (large capacity, mid capacity, flash).
Thats because Apple makes quality products. Sure their computers might freeze, but its rare, very rare.

Re: Gates donates $750 million
It may not be a simple issue.
On one hand, he gives money in a very conspicuous manner. We all know he gives money, as the foundation publicises it. That's a different form of charity to anonymous charity, which is considered by many to be a more 'pure' form of charity.
On the other hand - who cares how he does it so long as he does it? That money can do some real good in the world.
I think it's more complex than just "he's good" or "he's evil." In this case, perhaps he's wanting to give something back as his first intention, and other things may be secondary if considered at all.

Oh no, your PC freezes! So suddenly you hate Bill Gates and everything he does, even when donating to charity as "alternative motives." Because your PC freezes while you're whining about him on a forum, you hate him. It's really not his fault that you don't take care of your computer.

Gates has donated huge portions of his money and is actually quite a humble man IMO. Not to mention he's one of the smartest guys on earth. I dislike how he stole several ideas off of the mac and then was allowed to win every lawsuit, but I respect him highly as a person.

I concur, I'm glad that someone like Gates is the richest man. I'd certainly rather have someone like him handling large amounts of money than some greedy middle-eastern king or...Donald Trump (although some Middle Eastern royals have been extremely generous with their cash flow).

I use to have a quote as my signature saying something like..."No Steve, it's more like we have a rich neighbor named Xerox and you wanted to steal their TV. Only when you broke in, you found out I had gotten their first."

Don't take care of my comptuer? That makes me laugh, I take the best care of my computer, the ONLY reason that it freezes is because of Windows. Plain and simple. Show me where I said "I hate Bill Gates and everything he does", I never did. If he donates, good for him, and especally good for the people it helps. I was just sayin that in my mind, they cancel each other out, hence me saying "my opinon"....twice.

Windows XP is extremely stable when well taken care of. I'm assuming that's what you use. I've heard reports of no more than 2 freezes, my friend and I have both experienced 0 in the past year.

Well, you do not seem to be able to seperate a merchandise and a person!
As a example of what you just say!

right!
Doing something poorly is quite different from doing something that is illegal or unethical. There is far too much proof that MS has operated outside the law to maintain their market dominance, dealt in poor faith with partners and strongarmed OEMs. I find it unlikely Bill Gates knew nothing of this activity, so while I agree that giving large sums of money to charity is a fine thing it does not now exclude him from being judged on these other activities. I would also have to agree that much of this giving is P.R. motivated as many people give large portions of money to charity every day without a press release.
I don't think Gates is evil (but Steve Ballmer might be), just greedy and willing to break the law to win. Sadly, we now live in a society where we confuse capitalism and free markets with this kind of behavior, a sort of fiscal "survival of the fittest" which ignores bad behavior or poor citizenship if your profits are high enough. I don't buy in to this manufactured benevolence we see with Gates, feels very thin to me.
I'm not preaching against success, capitalism or even materialism (hell, I love Apple products, I need all the $$$ I can get). I'm all for people charging and getting what the market will bear, but I don't think anyone here really believs that MS plays by those same rules, meaning that much of the money being given was not ethically "gotten". Bill Gates can give away every dime, but it doesn't make him a decent human being.

Steve Jobs only wished he had that power and ability to do those things. You know he wants to, but he can't. He's trying to gain complete market dominance in the audio player right now.

Not that much money.
It's hard to donate $750,000,000 and not have it show up on the papers. That's an extremely large amount of money and it will not go unnoticed.
ya, your old sig was stupid.

What a weak argument you present, again. You assume Jobs and Co. would act illegally if they could, therefore it is appropriate for anyone to do so? Thanks for representing the kind of situational ethics that are taking this country down a thorny path, thanks for being part of the problem. Like many of your statements, this one has no supporting evidence, just your opinion. Keep up the great work!
A little research will show that the largest charitable contributions over the last few years (approx 1998-2003) were from individuals who donated in excess of $1 Billion each, about 6 people according to some documents. I can't be more exact because only 2 of them publicly disclosed who they were and how much they gave. Clearly, this level of charitable donation can be given in private if one wanted it that way.
Actually your old signature represents my first point quite well, if that quote is accurate it portrays perfectly the situational ethics that allow people with limited character to rationalize their actions. Hey, if you find this kind of thing appealing then stick to your guns, none for me thanks.

Like I said:
Now the false accusations start. When a Mac head is proved wrong, this happens:
1. He claims you lied and to prove what you already proved.
2. He claims that you should find better proof or that your sources don't exist, hoping nobody will notice that they do.
3. #1 is repeated
4. He insults you and says that you're wrong, he's right. Claims that he doesn't have to prove anything, and repeats #1 for the final time.
5. Other Mac Addicts and clueless Mac-crazed followers show up and perform step 1,2 and 4.
See #4. This one's almost over for you. It's pathetic how you claim I have a weak argument and that I lack sources when frankly, you've brought none to this thread and the majority of the people disagree with you. You know I hate people who lack sources, and you know I hate the same people who claim that against people who do have sources - poor flamebait attempt. Go start a flame with your BS somewhere else, where people want to hear from a jealous loser with senseless hatred towards a piece of software and it's developers.

Re: Gates donates $750 million
Rockefeller and Carnegie both donated lot's of money and like Bill Gates, they advertised the fact and had their names plastered all over anything they touched.
Vanderbuilt donated more than either of his contemporaries and did so anonymously.
God bless Bill for his charity, but He's still an ass.
