Air: Discuss.

Discuss what is the question.

There's not enough of it at 6500'.

Isn't it supposed to be "Gayer than a treeful of monks on nitrous oxide"?

I don't think so.

"Gayer than a treeful of monkeys"? Surely not monkies?

I don't hold misspelling against her.

Re: The Rules - Discuss

I have a few question if that's ok. Nothing specific, but I would like some clarity on a few things:

1) Is it against the rules to ask a particular group of people why they don't move to a location, be it state or nation, whose views are more similar to theirs?

2) Also, can you be breaking the rules for quoting what someone else says (directed at you), while the person who made the original comment end up with no issue at all?

Thanks.

In general, no, it isn't.  It's largely context based.

2) Also, can you be breaking the rules for quoting what someone else says (directed at you), while the person who made the original comment end up with no issue at all?

In general, no.  Again, it's largely context based.

Thanks.

Any time.

"This topic is locked?"  It was even replied to before it was rejected by the "forum gods," as you put it.

I know you missed it, so I'll just tell you what the reply said. It consisted of four letters: "I am just so original!."

Oatmeal. You're being too lock-happy again. After pouring so much effort and time into topics, you do a great disservice to me by blithely locking them. I know you like to assert your authority, but, you need to be more judicious.

Keep it up and I will leave permanently.

None of your threads were locked because of your initial post, but because of the crapfest they turned into later.

Re: The Rules - Discuss

That's not the point. When I spend a lot of time discussing an issue and some troll comes along on page 6 and ends up prompting a lock, that's not fair to me. Trolls shouldn't be granted so much power.

Sometimes it looks like Oatmeal is looking for any pretext to lock certain topics. That Bush faith-based initiatives topic has been locked twice. I'm getting really fed up with spending a lot of time and effort in topics only to have them arbitrarily locked whenever the mod feels like it.

There is only one topic that I find myself doing that in: Creation vs. Evolution.  There is no way, IMO, that that issue is EVER going to advance unless God incarnate steps in and says "This is how it was."  Even then people will still say "I don't think that was really God."
People on both sides of that issue are going to butt heads until they pass out from it, and then someone new will take their place. They're frustrating to the point of tearing my hair out; thank goodness I keep it too short to get a good grip on it.  As they tend to reach 10+ pages, it's pretty clear that I'm restraining myself there.

I do my best to follow the line in the rules about not closing a topic to win an argument.

I understand that you often put a bit of effort into your threads.  Hell, I even phrased rule #4 the way I did because I'm not unaware of it.

4) Stay on topic - Don

Re: The Rules - Discuss

This is more moderator focused than rule focused, but http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/ar … tml#006036  Instead of locking threads, you might want to consider moving more towards censuring the trolls, either through deletion of posts or disemvowelment.

Too true. I've never been able to prevent that, no matter how many times I've told people how it was.

I think you mistake your role. Your role is to keep reasonable order, not impose your views about the usefulness of a discussion on forum posters. I don't agree with the locking of topics on the whims of mods, when they feel "the discussion has run its course". That's arrogant and insulting to the people who spent time in the discussion.

Re: The Rules - Discuss

about the usefulness of a discussion

Clarification: Once a topic has passed the initial Rules test, it shouldn't be locked on page 4, 6, or 10 because the mod thinks it's boring.
