HELP! Finder is totally hosed. OS X 10.2.3
I carry my Tibook back and forth to work -- today, when I open it, the screen transparently blacks out and says "Reboot Now" in several languages. After that, the finder will NOT load completely. I cannot create a new folder on the desktop without getting an error -51. I cannot use the search function -- and my menu bar blinks on the right hand side where the time/date, volume control and airport icons are.
Has anyone seen this?
We tried disabling/deleting the automatic login functions of certain products, but really -- I haven't made any substantial system changes in quite some time. Help my baby, please....

You have experienced a Kernal panic.
Steps to take:
Open Disk Utility, click on the First Aid tab, click on "Repair Permissions."
If the problem persists, boot from the CD (or another Mac over FireWire) and use Disk Utility to repair the drive.
If that doesn't work, hold down the Shift key during startup - you should see "Safe Boot" or "Safe Mode." Can't remember which one. That forces fsck to run on the drive.
If that doesn't work, try creating a new user, and working in that user.
If that doesn't work, reinstall OS X 10.2, and do a Clean Install - just make sure you check the "Archive and Install" which will save your settings.

Reboot while holding down apple+s... that's single user mode... when it prompts you, enter fsck -y with a space between fsck and -y... hit return to check your drive integrity. If it shows/repairs problems, run it again to make sure its ok... sometimes, when fixing one problem, another shows up.
Once you have sucessfully rebooted, I would repair disk permissions as previously stated, just to be on the safe side.
By any chance, do you shut down your Powerbook every night? OSX needs to run certain maintenance scripts (cron tasks) to clean out system logs. If your Powerbook is off every morning (around 3AM) it has no chance to perform these tasks. I would download MacJanitor and run it every so often.

Thanks all for your help -- when I discovered that fsck -y wasn't getting beyond Checking the B-tree, I gave in and bought a copy of Disk Warrior. Let me tell you -- it fixed a HOST of problems in about 40 minutes and I was back online in an hour.
All of your suggestions were great, except that my system got REALLY screwed up somehow and I don't know where or how it happened.

Yes, DiskWarrior is a life saver! Hmmm you know DW3 will be out soon and will run natively in OSX, right? I sure hope you can get a rebate on it somehow...
Glad you got back up and running...
As for why that happened, it's possible that there were a few problems with the drive lingering there for awhile that went unchecked... that last crash could have been the straw that broke the camels back so to speak... all is not lost though...
