dvd-r formatting with a Superdrive?
Why can't someone read files on a PC from a dvd-r that I burned on the Superdrive? They are .shn files with .md5 files that verify on my Mac before and after they're burned. I have a 1Ghz Powerbook and used Maxell dvd-r's that were Made in Japan. Is there a problem with formatting, and the dvd-r can only be read on other Macs? Thanks.

How are you burning these files? Step by step, walk through it. It depends on what formatting you choose.

I don't think the Finder is capable of burning Hybrid (PC and Mac) compatible DVDs or CDs.
Try using Toast or another third party utility.

Re: dvd-r formatting with a Superdrive?
I know for a fact the the mac will burn (in OS X, from the Finder) CDs that are ISO9960 compatible. I use this feature to burn disks at home, on a mac, and read them at work on a PC (Win NT and 2000).
I do not have a DVD burner, so I cannot comment.

Re: dvd-r formatting with a Superdrive?
I have had intermittent trouble with CDs burned in the finder being read on a PC. Some people have trouble, some don't. Once I started to use Toast Titanium, no trouble. Plus there are a lot more options for burning. Burning in the finder is cool and easy, but Toast is worth it for the flexibility and peace of mind.

I burn both CD and DVD-R media from the finder on my super drive and the only format option for DVD-R is HFS+DVD 4.2GB. I have not tried them in a PC but they should not work. The CD's work fine on a PC.

If it's HFS+ - it definitely won't work, unless you buy MacDrive, which will allow PCs to read Mac formats.

Does your PC have a drive capable of reading a DVD-r disk?
That's what I was wonderin.

I also use Roxio Toast Light. Again.. I have not tried them in a PC but I think that Toast burns the DVD-R in a Hybrid format. It was a free download. It also takes less time as it burns in one step. The finder option copies it and then burns it. A bit annoying.

Re: dvd-r formatting with a Superdrive?
It can be annoying, but it is actually a feature to add/remove items from the CD before committing to the burn. How else could this happen without building a seperate app like Toast?

Re: dvd-r formatting with a Superdrive?
Thanks. This has helped a lot. I, too, have burned cdr's that work fine on PC's, but I'll try Toast for making dvd-r's that I want to send to people on PC's with dvd drives.
