Best version of VPC?
Looks like I need some stuff that is not Mac-compatible. What is the quickest version of VPC out there nowadays? I have an ibook 700, 384 RAM, with Jag. Thanks

Re: Best version of VPC?
Well the one that is sold now is version 6. Quick well depends on hardware but it's not bad. However, you have some immediate problem. Namely ram. That is if running more than one thing at a time of course. Looking at the Virtual PC6 box min. recommended ram is as follows. Windows 95 (no longer sold) is 160 meg's, Windows 98 is 192, Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Professional are all 256 meg's of physical ram. Next thing is that Virtual PC6 does a lot better with OSX 10.2.3 which I presume there is a good chance you are running.
My guess would be you would be best satisfied by using Virtual PC6/Windows 98 which I believe Connectix still sells. Also check your printer and what ever other usb peripherals you may have to see if they work under Virtual PC6. I believe they have some kind of list on their web site www.connectix.com but, I could be wrong.
Lastly though this should work fine under most cases for you, it's definitely not a substitute for a PC. On a DUAL 867 Tower I get the equivalent of a Pentium II 415 mhz. processor so your mileage will less but, by how much I can not say. Oh yeah one other minor issue. I trust you have plenty of disk space. The disk image will tend to grow and therein has laid a problem in using it on laptops in the past. Of course you could do what I did and get a firewire external hard drive and use it for Virtual PC only or for any other things you might desire for that matter.
Little nitpicks if I may. Scrolling can be a pain, Internet can be slow, and various other operations that are fast on a real PC, are far from it under Virtual PC. But, if you do not need to buy a PC (hardware that is) then Virtual PC if it supports all you are doing is a very economical choice indeed. Technical support is well iffy at best in fact I may again be wrong but, I believe they have gone to fee based technical support which appears to be the norm these days. Hope this helps and let me know what you decide on.

Re: Best version of VPC?
Thanks for the long informative reply. It looks like VPC Win98 for me. That should do the trick. I have 13 gig of HD left. That should be enough for VPC which I think uses 2gig of HD.
