HELP ME...Firwire Drive Gone...OS X Reverted back 12 days!!!

Ok, I'm screwed. I came home from work to find my 75g firewire drive won't mount in X or 9. It says it is unrecognizable by the system and gives my the option to format it. Then I noticed my desktop was a bit off...then I started getting emails from like a week ago and I don't have any newer files. What do I do? Aside from throw my system out....any ideas?
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...HELP!!!!

Re: HELP ME...Firwire Drive Gone...OS X Reverted back 12 days!!!

I've had a 60GB External FW for about a year, and a couple of times I've gotten that message. Boot into 9 and run Disk Warriror.Fixed the problem right up. I'v tried using Drive 10 once; it worked, but it took a LONG time and I've heard some bad things about it. Speaking of bad things - Norton. Did I mention Norton? It did nothing (which according to some peoples reports, that is the best result you can expect from Norton)

I've heard rumors of a X version of DiskWarrior in the works, but for now, I'd stick with DW for 9.

Now, you COULD borrow your friend's, but maybe you could call the DW people and ask if there will be an upgrade price to the X version. Support your Mac developers, especially the ones who do good work like DW.

And of course, "some peoples" would be wrong.
But why listen to someone like me that has experience using Norton on well over 200 Mac desktop machines and several Mac servers regularly?

I couldn't agree with this sentence more. smile

Use the tool that works the best for you. I am neither employed by, nor a stockholder in, Symantec. I've had my problems with Symantec in the past, but Disk Doctor and Speed Disk have never let me down when used according to recommendation. Could another product have done just as well? Maybe better?
Possibly.
But that's the 3rd party tool of that sort I've used and it does what I need, when I need it.

That's my "on the other hand" for the day.
Good luck.

...and watch out for the flying meat!

I'm with dingo. I've used Norton on only about a dozen machines and it's completely screwed 2 of them.

In the case of a disk or partition that the Mac can't recognize and won't mount I use Disk Warrior. Get the CD of it, and boot off of it and run the DW application on the troubled disk. In my experience, if the Mac can't recognize the disk/partition then Norton won't either.

Re: HELP ME...Firwire Drive Gone...OS X Reverted back 12 days!!!

Norton is suprising - in nine it would REGULARLY discover and fix drives the os would not mount - if the os is SEEING the disk at all (which it is as it asks you if you wish to initialize it) then norton can at least try to run on it.

I have NEVER - EVER seen norton kill a machine - and it has save my ass far more often than diskwarrior. Don't get me wrong - diskwarrior IS a more powerful tool - but it is SLOW, it's not for everday use. Norton is the  use when small qantities of feces impact the wind turbines, and for regular maintenance (much like fsck in single user mode) but when things go really screwy (which I have NEVER in 10+ years of using norton seen happen) norton gets in over it's head - so grab diskwarrior. One is easier to use and faster to run (norton) the other  is much more in depth and likely to fix EVERY LAST LITTLE problem you have, but takes for freaking ever to run.

Re: HELP ME...Firwire Drive Gone...OS X Reverted back 12 days!!!

Ok...It is getting stranger. I mentioned that everything in my OS X system folder had reverted back 12 days and I didn't know why. I still don't know why but... I found my system drive just like I left it on my backup OS X drive on my original 6Gb IBM drive. I have not booted off that drive since about 12 days ago when I cloned it using Carbon Copy.  So could CC be to blame? How does that explain the missing Firewire drive? The good news is that my Firewire drive appears to be ok... it just won't mount. I just hope it mounts when I swap into my machine this weekend.

That could be the problem.  Try doing a clean install of OS X.

I don't think that would matter since OS 9 does the same thing.

Re: HELP ME...Firwire Drive Gone...OS X Reverted back 12 days!!!

Got it back... : ) . Thanks to an ass whoopin from Disk Warrior in OS 9.  So I bought another firewire drive to back that one up.....and now I am having problems with the new one. This is an OS X problem only, it works like a champ in 9. I am synching the drives or even copying items to it and it will just freeze about 2-5 minutes into it. Even when I don't have anything copying to it my system gets very, very slow and applications freeze up and get the beach ball (force quit won't work) Any ideas? It is a ADS 1394 drive kit enclosure and a IBM Deskstar  60 GB 180GXP drive. I am going to post a new topic about this drive problem. Thanks.
