Re: Mini or MDD?
alright.
1st. Awesome about the comic. i love comics and would still be collecting if i had the cash, but i need a job (in grad school and so other things > comics). goodluck on the comicbook.
2nd. for the stuff you wanna do, i say MDD. Sure it's not as portable, but you can have
more ram
more/faster hard drives
upgradable and better graphics cards
pci slots for anything you need expansion wise
. . . stuff i haven't thought of.
Also, since you have a pc, you'll want a KVM switch. Check out Belkin and Iogear (i have a kvm switch from Iogear and love it, it allows me to also hook up speakers and printers to it as well for switching). Don't buy from them directly, go to newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com for a cheaper price.
software: illustrator over freehand, i have no clue. technically if you get the creative suite and macromedia studio you'll get both plus about 5-6 other programs w/them. check out academicsuperstore.com for educational prices (you mentioned you were in college).
finally, consider a single 1.8 g5 under apple's edu. store, compare it to the mdd you may get. who knows, it may be comparable in price. avoid macofalltrades and the other 2nd hand mac online stores for actual mac computers, they are rips, IMO.
again goodluck, and remember to take advantage of your educational discount.
PS, one more thing: regarding scanners, check out canon scanners. you can find a nice LiDE scanner for $100 or a better one for about $150 (all prices american). check out a past issue of macaddict, they compare a bunch of scanners.

Re: Mini or MDD?
primarily DC comics i collected way too many titles but i had been collecting since 1992.
All superman titles
JLA
JSA
Young Justice
Flash
Green Lantern
Martian Manhunter (from beginning to end, and a damn good title)
Hitman (from about issue 37 to the end)
Hellblazer -- such a damn good comic, wish i were still getting it
Titans
Aquaman - Peter David rocks, Eric Larsen butchered the title (smurf him and Image), Dan Jurgens almost resurrected it but it was too late.
Miscellaneous series
I've actually met Dan Jurgens and Alex Ross at various comic conventions in Chicago (now called Wizard World since they bought the convention out), as well as the Artist/Writer of Buck Rogers. I seriously contemplated the Jack Kirby school (i think that's it) but they didn't have much emphasis on writers, which is what i am.
I used to collect most of the spider-man titles but quit right around the clone saga. God did they smurf him up. Personally Marvel was in the toilet right around the time they went bankrupt in the late 90's. I hated that they started a bunch of titles over at issue #1 because I consider an issue # a marker of age. I mean Action Comics will reach #1000 in like four years or so, that's damn amazing!
To me, marvel books got too soap opera like.
Comics own. They are one helluva money sink but god do i love them.
I have the complete Akira series, and somehow i ended up with two 1970's marvel posters, Kung-Fu and Werewolf by Night. I need to frame them.

Re: Mini or MDD?
i forgot to mention i wanted 1gig of ram in whatever machine i buy
and in terms of comics..
Spidey started it for me i was 'reading' spiderman before i could read i just tried to make sense of the pictures, i was always a bigger fan of marvel than the distinguished competition but you're right about the clone saga and the bankruptcy thing toybiz has ruined it my one saving grace from it was black panthers mag its pretty neat. i got into spawn and then right back out after collecting it all gave away all my issues to a girlfriend who loved it (issues 1-100something) i like cremator from chaos comics for its 'too much' computer work, grendel for stories and originality and flaming carrot for everything, flaming carrot is my #1 favourite. shadowhawk is good too and the maxx is probably #2 on my list.
(oh yeah and Spiderman 2099, got every issue and variant cover
the first and last 2099 title)

Re: Mini or MDD?
the 2099 titles were teh shiz. i got some of each, to me it was a line that was cut way too short. I had the dr. doom series that i liked the most.
i love comics. sigh.
can't wait to get a fulltime job. i can pay off debt and get comics again.

Re: Mini or MDD?
Write your script, get with some friends, shoot it on video, edit it on your buddy's G5 (skip the mini) and then shop it around. You'll make more money, have more fun and get a better rep with people doing that, than as 'the creep who makes pornographic kiddie books'. Trust me, it's a label I wouldn't wish on any of my enemies.
When you get back into school, making a project like that will be easier; folks will come out of the woodwork to help you out.
Get into school. Make lots of friends. Get a Mac. Make your video. Sell it. Come back here victorious and gloat.
