Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Personally, i liked Mario 64 better, though Mario Sunshine DOES have a lot going for it.....I really like the water effect, and the way ripples distort the image of anything underneath the surface. This game just doesn't bring ENOUGH to the table, although it still is a good game. There are a few things about this game that annoy me......
1. Why did they take away his attacks? like the jump kick and the punches......
2. The camera STILL gets stuck on objects, but the good thing about the camera is that you can always reposition it to make jumps easier. In Mario 64, sometimes no matter how you positioned the camera, it would reposition itself behind Mario, which made a lot of jumps quite risky.....
3. He no longer has his long jump, (y'know, z trigger and jump at the same time) and that turn jump i find REALLY annoying, because you would get it when you don't need it, and it was inconsistent when you actually TRIED to get it......
The wall kicks are MUCH easier now, though!
4. What's with all the water? I think Nintendo was just trying to show off the water effects the Gamecube is capable of, because the FLUDD device just doesn't seem to belong in some stages....
5. Some of the stages seem ridiculously hard, that is, until you try a much simpler approach. I hated that "secret of the lake" stage (kept falling offa those rotating cubes, until i tried just RUNNING from side to side instead of jumping). It's a wonder my contoller still works....
Feel free to list your likes or dislikes........
p.s. i kinda wish SOMEONE would bring American McGee's ALICE to one of the consoles........

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Mario 64, quite possibly one of the greatest games of all time. I was so looking forward to Super Mario Sunshine, Mario 64 2, as if was called back then. By time it came out I didnt care. My brother is a huge gamer, and of course got the game the day it came out. I tried it out and couldn't get into it. Same thing happen with Super Mario RPG, the only RPG I've ever liked. When Super Mario RPG2 fianlly came out (Paper Mario), I didnt care. Heres hoping Halo 2 comes out before the next gen

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Paper mario isn't super mario RPG 2. it's not even made by the same people. it is very similar in that it is an RPG starring Mario characters, but it is very different in the approach. first SMRPG was made by Squaresoft and EAD, Paper Mario was made by intelligent Systems (I think, if not, it was HAL)
anyway... HALO 2 is comming out this year for XBOX and will support XBOX Live.
Allice is supposed to be comming to consoles... I have no idea what happened to it though...
and now, back to SMS...
I didn't much care for it. it had some good ideas, but they got to be not fun. They should have stuck to a more M64 approach and forgot about the water pack. the water is some of the best I've ever seen in any games. especially in the ocean.... it wasn't fun to me, and I love mario games... I am a minority though, but still, it just wasn't up to par with Mario standards. Miyamoto said that a more mario 64 type game (tentatively called Mario 128) is going to be released, I'd bet early 2004 though if I had to guess on a timeframe for release...

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
yeah....that water pack really made the game suck. and i LOVE mario games. I have finished each and every one of them (except the japanese Super Mario 2) and am currently working on SMS. It's an ok game, but doesn't quite continue in the footsteps of previous mario games.....
I have to admit that the water effects are some of the best (if not THE BEST so far) that i've ever seen in a video game.....
any other opinions...?

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Mario Sunshine quite possible has the worst cutscenes and story ever.... well except maybe Conker's BFD. They shoulda just left them out. Anyone else getting tired of Nintendo's recycled sound effects? I don't think Mario has had a new sound effect since Mario 64. Mario Kart 64, Mario Tennis, um... never really played Mario Parties but I assume they all have those same samples of mario "Wooohooo, whaaahhaaaa, oooh".
I feel the same way as b, Mario 64 was great but I just couldn't get into Sunshine. If they'd just of removed the stupid water backpack, I'd been much happier.

Hmm, I liked it.
It's different, but I don't think that makes the game worse in any way. It's not as revolutionary as Super Mario 64 was, maybe that's why people seem to be a bit disappointed.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Actually I am pretty sure that paper mario was going to be mario rpg2. But I guess square didnt want to make a second one and paper mario is what came out. So it was going to be super mario rpg2. As for halo 2 I wouldn't trust microsoft's relase dates, but for halo 2 it probley will come out on time, because it is a huge, flapship title. But maybe not
Halo 1 for pc/mac was suppose to be a 2002 release...

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
Mario 64 is great!
I completely dissagree. I hated M64. This isn't to say that I didn't play it... on the contrary. I beat the game in a matter of days. I could not stand (still can't) the direction they took the Mario series. VERY dissapointing.
Oooh it's 3D. I'm sorry but it made the game suck. No more enemies. Just running around endless polygon worlds. BORING INDEED. (Note: sure there are some fun parts, but point being that it strayed too far from the Mario it used to be).
Anyway, because they took it in a different direction (3D run and jump v. sidescrolling action) I find Sunshine to be FAR superior. Graphics are MUCH more important in this type of game, and Mario Sunshine is actually enjoyable to look at, versus M64 which was like looking into a shoebox. Just look at the trippy mushroom world (the one with mushrooms underneith the village and the big tree). Nice eye candy.
Plus, they found something interesting to play with in FLUDD. It actually warrents the 3D world, where M64 was just showing off.
Water effects are great, the puzzles more fun, everything is better with Sunshine because they improved on the concept of a 3D Mario game.

u know what? the more i play this game, the more i like it! sure it aint no mario 64, and that may be a lil dissapointing to the Mario purists, but it's not a bad game nonetheless! some stages are ridiculously hard, so get yourself something that you can afford to break over and over again!

Yes it was. Did you see the early screens of SMRPG2? It was being developed for the N64, but it looked like a bad SNES game. They sorta changed that, but kept the 2D-ey and cartoony look.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
I loved both M64 and Sunshine.
And both stunned me with the graphics at the time. I'm sure another mario title will come out with similar play to the 64 one, so we can see Mario punching and kicking in all its delicious GameCube glory!

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
My thoughts on Mario Sunshine: GREAT (not good, GREAT) game, but not nearly as great as Mario 64 (although, M64 is my favorite game of all time so technically NO game is as great as Mario 64).... the thing about Sunshine that I dislike is that they took away the freedom of it's predecessor. In Mario 64, most of the time, you could get ANY star you wanted to (not necesarily the one that was selected at the beginning of the level).... I LOVED that, and I was sorely disappointed MS didn't follow suit.
Also, my least favorite part of Mario 64 were the red coin stars, so it kind of sucked that sunshine has so many of them (and I'm not a fan of the blue coins)

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
i actually like the fact that you cant find the stars in any order.........
almost every time you enter a stage to find a different star, the level changes slightly, and to me, it makes it just a lil bit more inneresting that way...
the red coin stars in SMS aren't any easier this time around, i really had to resist the tempation to fling my controller against my tv....some levels are just downright frustrating! expect to hear that "you're dead" theme OVER and OVER again!!!
i find it annoying that EVERY TIME you find a blue coin, the game pauses and gives you the option to save, so just imageine if you are on a stretch that has like TWENTY blue coins.......grrr......
just wait till the LATER levels....

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
One day I impulsively wanted to buy a Gamecube and the closest place was a Blockbuster. They only had the Gamecube with SMS, and not wanting to go anywhere else I bought it. I forgot how much fun the Mario game can be. I am really digging it. I play for a few nights in a row and then forget about it for 3 weeks or so. And then I play again. I sure am glad Blockbuster didn't have the plain system.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
I'm not a huge fan of Mario Sunshine. I like it okay, but I wouldn't have bought a system just for that game. IMO it's too much like Mario 64, which I also didn't like much. I'll buy it when it becomes a Player's Choice title, but renting it for a week was good enough for now.
Also, I thought the camera was surprisingly bad for a Nintendo game. Probably above average overall, but worse than I'd expect from Nintendo, especially a high profile game like that.
I loved the older Mario games, Super Mario Bros. 3 in particular, and I wish some day we'd get a real Super Mario Bros. 4. At least I hope this next Mario game that's rumored is really different from 64/Sunshine.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine......waddaya think?
it was just ok.
mario 64 was one of the most innovative titles of all time, and so sunchine hd a lot to live up to. the game was completely uninpired and utterly ruched. a majority of the shines were obsacle courses blue coin BS. i think JSRF/JGR or Rayman 2 are the best platformers ive played since mario 64
