SO, I Have $1600...

Well, I've decided to spend most of it, but not all of it, on Mac stuff I can tinker with.

I'm currently looking at a dual 500mhz G4, with 68 pin SCSI, two 40gig drives on an ATA 133 controller, ZIP, DVD, an OEM ADC-equipped Radeon and  a gig o' RAM.

I'm also looking at Pismo PowerBook. I kick myself often for having sold the one I had.
It comes with Airport, 512mb of RAM, a 20 gig hard drive and it's the 400mhz version.

The cost for both comes to roughly $1000, and plans would be to overclock both machines, by 50mhz per processor.

Of course, I could be really daring. If I underclock the dualie to 400mhz ( 4:1 ratio ), then set its bus to 133, I'd have a dual 533 on a 133 bus. That would be sweet big_smile
It may not be faster than two 550s on a 100mhz bus, but it could be interesting to find out.
I'd also upclock the Radeon.

I'd also be up to swapping the DVD ROM in the Pismo, by pulling it out of its expansion bay plastics and throwing in either a superdrive or a combo drive. It's a less expensive and more creative method than buying one outright.

Aside from that, I'll consider a custom maching paint job for both ( it's a time issue ). I'm thinking matching red with black or navy blue trim.

The bits and pieces in my current G4 would be swapped over.
It hasn't been behaving quite the same since being shipped during my move. I'm really hating Fedex lately.

Anyhow, this solution leaves me with around $500 or so to do other things, or buy processor upgrades for either or maybe both machines. I'd really like ot throw a 900mhz upgrade in the Pismo.

If anyone else has ideas to throw my way, throw 'em.

OK. I'm moving forward with the Pismo purchase, but I've found a 733mhz Digital Audio G4 for much less than the dualie tower.

I'd say $425 is a good deal for a 733/133 machine, with the 7450 G4, 4x AGP, and a fourth PCI slot.

Not bad at all - that's the system my dad has, he loves it.

And it's quite tinkerable... though Macs in general really need more drive bays.

Re: SO, I Have $1600...

I'm quite happy with my once-was-733MHz Digital Audio machine. She's currently running dual 160GB Serial-ATA Seagates on a SeriTek PCI card, an M-Audio Revolution 7.1, USB 2.0 PCI, NEC 16x Dual-Layer DVD burner, 1.5GBs of matched Crucial RAM, 1.47GHz/2MB L3 G4 7455 and a Radeon 9000 Pro.

Next upgrade will be Giga's Dual 1.6/1.73GHz G4-7447A upgrade, when it ships. Probably in conjunction with a Radeon 9800 Pro or hacked 9600 XT 128MB.

Not sure but I think they discontinued the Pismo upgrades. PL had lots of issues with them. Those G3s are hot CPUs too, might want to look for a 500Mhz+ 7410 instead.

Re: SO, I Have $1600...

Thanks, all.

Bad News...
Beacuse I'm new to the Academy, I have to wait an extra month for my FA refund sad

S'okay, tho, the guy I'm buying from refurbishes these G4s, so he's always got several for sale.
I figure, by the time a month passes, I'll also have some cash saved up from my job, to buy more parts and do more tinkering.

Oh, and I'm gonna try the 867 upclock on the 733. The heatsink already has a fan.
As for the Pismo, I'm thinking 450, if I purchase the 400, and 550 for the 500.

A girl I'm developing a bit of a flame for was given a 533/133 ( also a Digital Audio ).
I'm a tad jealous. That's a damn fine machine to have as a hand-me-down.
