Animated GIFs in emails?

Is there a way to place an animated gif in an email such that when the msg is opened the gif will play. Certainly you could put a little note to the effect to open the gif in a web browser but that isn't very elegant. Any email clients that can do this? HTML code? etc?

Re: Animated GIFs in emails?

You're gonna want to build an HTML page and then send it out via a program like MaxBulkMailer or DirectMail.

I've used DirectMail and it works great.
It only runs on OSX and uses sendmail to do the dirty work so that you don't flood your ISP with bulk mail.

It may be overkill for what you want to do, but those kinds of programs are pretty much your only bet.

Re: Animated GIFs in emails?

Thanks, but all I want to do is animate a gif in one email; no bulk about it. Got any examples in HTML for this?

Re: Animated GIFs in emails?

Your putting a lot of faith in the recipient's email client.  Many email clients do not display animation.  Some I've noticed are Outlook for Windows (not sure which version) and Lotus Notes (again, not sure).

Now that I think of it, the list of email clients that support animated gifs might be smaller than the list that do not.

Either that, or I've been doing something way wrong.

The reason I mention those programs is because they're the only way to get full-on HTML coding into an email.

But if it's only for one email, I would just provide a link to a web page where you have full control, and where animated gifs will work all the time. I've never paid attention, but after reading registered_user's post, I can't think of having seen an animated gif in an email before...

Or if you just want to send one email, you can send me the code and I'll send it for ya big_smile
