Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
I Use Extensis Suitcase 11.0.2 and I use Indesign and Quark sometimes. I've noticed that it's SOOOOOO slow. ANyone else having this porblem? What do you other guys and gals use? I definately have to have my fonts in sets so that's why I use it, plus I need automatic font activation in indesign and Quark.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
What apps do you use? And does it have auto activation? I'm a graphic Designer and it's essential that a font utility should activate fonts on launch of a document.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
i have licenses for both suitcase and font reserve. i only use font reserve because it is way more stable, fast, and reliable.
font reserve includes auto activation, but i never use it. i never use any auto activation because it leads to problems at press time. you should have to be consciously aware of what fonts are opening and being used, and auto activation prevents that.
but that is my opinion. other people i work with swear by auto activation.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
use Suitcase X1 (11.0.4) with the entire Adobe CS, Quark 6.1.
i'm in InDesign 90% of the day and with auto-activation it does take some time to get it to activate fonts.... lots of times i will go check SC just to see if it has activated and it has, even though ID hasn't recognized it yet. Yes it's slow, but IMHO it's the best thing going.
I used FontReserve for a while and got tired of it becoming corrupt and F'ing up the font database, rebuilding it, and repeating. Got rid of that $#!7 quick and moved to Suitcase.
p.s. if you want to PERMANENTLY activate a font, hold option when you activate... you'll know because the dot becomes green instead of yellow.

Fontbook works for me. I'm fairly opposed to having a million different fonts on my machine, so I don't need a bloated organization tool.
If you have millions of fonts on your machine, you could probably stand to work on your typography skills

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
Another Font Reserve fan here. I prefer the way it builds a font library instead of just linking to the actual fonts which end up all over my machine.
Unfortunately, we have to use suitcase server at work and it's a smurfing nightmare. That's mostly because people in design don't listen to IT or production. We gave you permission to use this client approved set of fonts and I can see that you've gone and installed your own fonts. Well, uninstall em and go back and replace em every smurfing place you used em because there are 20 of us that need to work on these files and you're the only one with the uglyass, truetype, freebie dowload, PDF hatin, piece of smurf fonts on your damn computer. I'm beginning to learn that "designers" are idiots.
But yeah. FONT RESERVE BABY! wooOOooHOO!

how about this: if you have millions of fonts on your machine, it's probably because over the past 14 years you have typeset thousands of books and things for various clients, all with their own fonts.
if you have 20 fonts, and that's all you use for your design/typesetting, then i feel sorry for your clients.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
at the print shop where I work we use font reserve.
We had suitcase but it wasn't as good.
We cannot really use the auto activation since we have so many different versions of the same fonts coming in from all of our clients. Font book looks like it would be ok if we didn't have so many fonts to deal with.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
Font Book
I used to use Suitcase but switched.
I have about 2500 fonts but 2300 of those are outside any font folder and only about 100 or so of the other 200 are active. I have a basic set that has most of my favorite fonts which is on all the time and then when I am working on a logo or something that needs some more wow I will activate the other 100.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
Hm.
When I dumped about 2k fonts into my system, Font Book was able to organize all of them, but system response was slow. Took me 10 minutes to boot up my G4 1ghz and double the time it usually takes to launch an app that uses fonts (like Photoshop. Or Word.). Even worse, programs like Photoshop wouldn't display all of the fonts, just a fraction of them. So I've deleted most off my machine until I can come up with a solution that would work.
Would Suitcase or others make it to where I could have profiles load particular fonts at particular times? Or not allow all to load at once?
I'm not a so-called "serious designer", I mostly meddle these days, so don't jump on me for having all the fonts I've collected from stuff I've bought or my ex bought from years ago.

i agree. try working prepress for a while and you'll soon learn the value of a good font management program.

Suitcase.
Font Agent Pro is good on paper, but if you have a large number of fonts, be prepared to spend a month adding them.
EDIT: I'm talking over 15,000 fonts here.

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
Wow...am I the ONLY one who uses ATM? I thought that that was the industry standard! I work for a publishing company and we design newspapers and magazines. I've never had any problems with it. My sister uses Suitcase and I just found it frustrating. Of course, I was never formally tutored on it, and only using it here and there won't give me any experience with it! Also, mainly we use Quark and Multi-Ad Creator...I SO much prefer Quark, though. I don't know of ANYBODY else who uses Multi-Ad!

Are you still using 0S9? I have vague recollections of multi-ad creator, but that's from back in the late 90s - has it been updated for OSX?

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
Hi, and yes we're still on 9. We plan on getting ONE computer that is going to be dedicated to only OSX, and no it hasn't been updated for X. But they just came out with a new version for 9 that is a little better, but I still prefer Quark.
Sometimes I feel as if we're behind, but we still occasionally get floppy discs!!! And my computer is a newer G4, it doesn't even have the Zip drive anymore.

I have some friends who still work with Quark in OS9 - they figure if it ain't broke, no need to fix (and blow thousands on) it - there's nothing wrong with that. They have the same plan: get one OSX machine and creep forward as necessary. They don't use multi-ad creator though

Re: Which Font Utilitiy do you use?
I use Suitcase 11.0.2 with OS X 10.3.8 and Quark, Illustrator, Indesign...
All works fine, so I didn't bother upgrading to 11.0.4. I've heard that Font Reserve os good and will be checking it out soon.
