trackpad transformation

My Powerbook's trackpad has been becoming ever losing it's usefulness, and gaining in annoyance infliction when I am forced to use it.  Then I started wondering whether or not it would be feasible to change it into a mini-tablet of sorts.  After a quick search through google, and coming up with nothing, i decided to come here and ask.
So,
might anyone who stumbles upon this thread have any earthly clue as to a way to accomplish this?
I assumed that it would be a software modification, but still couldnt' resist putting it here, despite this forum's mostly hardware-oriented nature.

A replacement driver, probably..

(I have a Kensington PilotMouse Optical, which has become a standard companion for my Powerbook, thus another reason to find a new use for my trackpad.)
