Need advice on which Font Manager
Ok I recently switched employers. I went from a production position at a marketing place to a design job with more responsiblities. Any ways at the old place I used Suitcase X1 for managing my fonts. I would get conflicts now and again and figured out that if I disable some fonts in FontBook then the conflicts would go away. At the new place they recently switched to OS X.3 and Creative Suite, Freehand MX (I hate this program) and ditched Quark. They never bought a font manager yet so I went to Extensis.com and seen that they bought out FontReserve. They are now selling both Font Managers (Font Reserve and Suitcase). I've heard good things about both programs and only used Suitcase. I was wondering if one is better than the other, or if they are identical. Thanks for any help and information.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
So no one here uses a font manager. I think it might be Suitcase cause it sounds like they have an old version here (will have to dig through a storage place) and then we'll just have to pay the upgrade price.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
i tried both suitcase and font reserve a few months ago and ended up purchasing 10 font reserve licenses. neither software is 100% bug free, but i had less trouble with font reserve. plus i like the way that font reserve handles fonts.
you can get a free demo of each from the extensis site and i suggest you do that if you've never used font reserve. try it for a week and see what you think.
there are some other options.... "master juggler" has been mentioned before, as well as some others that i can't remember.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
we also had both suitcase and font reserve.
After trying them both I just removed suitcase never to look at it again.
This isn't to say font reserve is carefree, just less hassle.
I am going to try font agent pro soon see if that is any better.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
I use Font Reserve. to bad the development seems to cease. Looks like Extensis tried to bump up Suitcase users number.
Don't think I'll ever switch to Suitcase. Guess I'll look around maybe I can find a better font manager than Suitcase. Font Book is okay but it lacks collect for output and isn't very suitable for organizing many fonts and groups.
PS: I believe there's another topic about font management apps (created a few weeks a go). It had more replies, maybe you can look it up.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
Thanks for the input. I also checked out the other thread. No luck on seeing if there was an older version of Suitcase. I think I will download FontReserve and use it for a week and make the decision then. Thanks again.

Although font management utilities can be handy, a lot of designers have their font folders littered with ugly display type, novelty type, and or free internet fonts. For the love of god... burn those thing
Limiting yourself to professionally designed typefaces will make browsing through your fonts a lot easier.

Re: Need advice on which Font Manager
I actually prefer Suitcase over Font Reserve mostly because of a bad history with FR.
And yeah, stick with the higher end fonts over the novelties. You can always keep them for an odd job here and there but I would keep a set active with the old standards. You will use them more often in most cases.
I never found any font manager to be perfect but keeping your library clean with quality fonts as opposed to downloaded junk, makes a huge difference.

You've got a lot better chance of having your files actually output problem free if you stay away from those cheapo fonts too. This coming from an output guy...trust me, fonts are the bain of my existance.
We also use Suitcase XI. I hate it but I've gotten used to it. Suitcase has sucked since version 9.
